THE POLICE CALENDAR.
Three cases were heard in police
court this week. Louisa Danes,
the Indian maiden who was before the beak last week, was up
again, this time for pulling hair,
of which some handfuls were \
offered as evidence. She was
fined $21.50 by Indian Agent
Loring and after a day in jail
paid up and was released. Catherine Green was arrested for
hanging around town after being
told to go home by the Indian
Agent, and she was fined $13.53
or one month in jail. She is still
in jail.
Charles Hall was fined $5 for
being drunk and disorderly on
May 11, before Magistrate Allison.
Eighty-two sacks of belated
mail, mostly newspapers, arrived
by the first two boats up the
river. The Port Simpson brought
39 and the Hazelton 43. During
last winter Hazelton people received about one copy out of five
of the papers to which they were
subscribers.
Recent arrivals from Bulkley
valley say the roads are in fine
condition, better than in any previous year at the same time.
Peters & McDougall have taken
a lease on the lot opposite the
Omineca hotel and are erecting a
building to be used for a restaurant. Later a larger building
will be put up. They expect to
be ready for business in a few
days.
Milwaukee, May 12: Nearly
the entire northeastern part of
the forest lands of Minnesota
have been burning fiercely for
three days. Vast regions in Wisconsin have been swept clean
and the loss will run into the
millions. Much timber has already been destroyed at the
western end of the northern
peninsula of Michigan.
Several towns in both states
were threatened when communications were interrupted.
The fires are scattered over an
area of five hundred miles. Thr
densest pall of smoke ever seen
hangs over Lake Superior. Almost without warning the flames
entered the largest tract of standing timber in the state and fanned by a gale spread rapidly.
A. Rosenthal has been ap-1 ^res are burning fiercely on

The town of Ralston is surrounded by flames and every resident
is fighting but the town seems
doomed.
Orand Marais Doomed.
Duluth, May 13:- A wireless
from Grand Marais says fires are
bearing down on the village. The
operator said that was the last
message and he must abandon
the tower. Grand Marais is situated on the shore of Lake Superior. Boats have been sent to
the relief. Wild animals are
rushing to the shore in droves.

G. W. Averill of Vancouver,
dentist and optician, will be in
Hazelton for a few weeks. Those
desiring his services should make
appointments as soon as possible.
C. H. Park, an American mining man, and his son Kenneth
passed through Hazelton this
week on their way to Bulkley
valley. Last fall Mr. Park invested in mining property adja
cent to the valley and it is his
intention to conduct development J time to time as fast as
work this summer. I can be used.

BRITISH COLUMBIA'S
INDUSTRIES
Farming and mining are the
two industries upon which this
portion of British Columbia will
in the future rely for support.
That both can be conducted within a narrow compass will be of
benefit to each, giving the miners
supplies without heavy transportation costs and the farmers a
home market for their produce.
The greatest single factor in the
upbuilding of the country is the
successful development of the
lode mines. Farming and coal
mining will be much more rapidly developed with a large number
of prospects being turned into
paying mines in close proximity
than from any other cause. So
far the claims that have been
worked have produced results
flattering to the country and
profitable to the men who are
spending their money. To date
over five hundred mineral locations have been made in Omineca
Mining Division and mining men
with a life time of experience in
camps throughout the West have
stated to the Herald that they
never before saw so much mineral nor of such high grade as they
have seen in this district in one
summer. Only a small amount
of work has been done and that
on a few properties. No failure
has has been recorded. Every
claim that has been developed
has stood the test and with a
depth of three hundred feet
reached on two properties in the
lasl few months there has been
no pinching of the leads or a lowering of the high values of the
surface ore.
With all the claims that have
been staked and all the ore that
has been found the district as a
whole has been barely run over.
With the men already coming
into the country and the interest
aroused over mining it is reasonable to suppose that more prospecting will be done this year
than in any two previous summers.
With a stretch of country over
a hundred miles in length known
to be mineral bearing it cannot
be imagined that more than a
mere fraction of the mineral has
already been found.
With only a reasonable allowance for future discoveries it is
not difficult to imagine the mineral output of Omineca district
amounting to the present total
for the province within five years
after steel is laid on the G. T. P.
BUSINESS IMPROVING
Since the arrival of the first
boat a marked improvement has
taken place in all lines of business. Parties outfitting for trips
to the interior have made good
business for the stores and the
arrival of many prospective settlers has created a demand for
farm lands in the adjacent valleys. Several parties have gone
into Bulkley valley to look over
the ground before purchasing.
People going to Francois Lake
and the Morice River will find a
nice assorted stock at Silver-
thorn's.

ALDERMERE, B. C. THE OMINECA HERALD SATURDAY, MAY 14. 1910.
A GREAT MINERAL
BET
A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE
OMINECA MINING
DIVISION
The mineralized portion of the
Omineca Mining Division lying
tributary to Hazelton and in
which ore of sufficient value and
quantity has been found to indicate future dividends, extends in
a general north and south direction for a hundred miles and Hazelton is about equally distant
from either end; if anything we
are nearer the southern end than
the northern. Commencing in
the mountains in which the Telkwa, Morice and Copper rivers
head, it takes in Hudson Bay
mountain, on the west side of
Bulkley valley, the Babine mountains between Babine lake and
Bulkley valley and continues at
least as far as Kuldo, seventy
miles up the Skeena, almost due
north of Hazelton.
Within this zone the ores are
; lead and copper, carrying silver
i and gold values with occasional
reports of dry ores.
 Within this belt and tributary
j to the main line of the Grand
Trunk Pacific there are six plac-
I es that give indication of becom-
f ing camps of importance. In the
Telkwa mountains the high grade
i ores alone, ores that can be work-
jed without expensive plants,
j promise two mining town in different creeks.
On the south side of Hudson
Bay mountain, at the head of
, Pine creek, there is a solid block
<of forty claims, among which are
'the well known groups owned by
R. J. McDonell of Hazelton, John
V|Halley, Simpson brothers and J.
i,and J. K. Ashman. These properties have all been more or less
developed and several hundred
jtons of high grade ore are piled
pn the dumps waiting the advent
of the rails to Telkwa, a distance
i;ijf eleven miles from the claims.
1 In the Babine mountains, 45
rniles from Hazelton, and east of
[Morieetown are the properties of
(Jhe Babine Bonanza Co., formerly known as the Cronin properties, and the Law group, under
>ond to a syndicate represented
>y C. F. Law of Vancouver. Both
iave high grade silver lead ores.
Close to these clains are several
jjcroups of prospects that show
ilstonishing values. In the same
Neighborhood but on the side
Lacing Bulkley river is the Pack-
T-'rain group owned by C. G.
iarvey and Barrett & Co., of
H'azelton. This is a copper and
ilver proposition with values
/ound $125 a ton, and two feet
ore.
('At the northern end of the
j'abine range, on the south side
  Bear river, eighteen miles
!om Hazelton and ten miles from
fe railway, is the Buckskin
jjfoup, on which a 300 foot tun-
|;'l is being driven under the di-
ijiction of Frank Martin. Good
jje was encountered almost at
1 Is start. The Buckskin group
fjthirty miles from the Cronin
mp and between them little or
prospecting has been done.
}[)n Nine Mile mountain the
'! ver Cup has been proved to
be a mine. Three other properties are under bond and work is
to be commenced in a month.
There are numerous fine showings on the hill. From the Lead
King group five tons of high
grade galena, assaying from $125
to $147 dollars a ton was practically picked up on the surface
and packed to town.
Cariboo mountain, north of
Nine Mile mountain and
across the Salmon creek gulch,
has ores and formation similar
to Nine Mile, on the surface.
The first locations were made
last summer and nothing beyond
assessment work has yet been
done on the hill.
From Hazelton to Kuldo, a
station on the telegraph line, is
known to be a mineral country
and was in fact the scene of
quite a rush some fourteen years
ago, when about thirty locations
were made and several short
tunnels driven to open up the
veins. As the values were not
high enough, ranging from one
to two hundred dollars, to be
handled at that time all of these
claims were allowed to lapse.
Some of them have been relocated in the past two years.
Transportation is the great drawback but the construction of a
branch line to the coal measures
of Groundhog mountain would
relieve that diffictlty.
Two Sales of Town Property.
Harvey & Davis report the sale
of the house and lot owned by E.
C. Stephenson to Miss Pauline
Stanton for $1,800 cash and the
adjoining lot, also owned by Mr.
Stephenson, to Henry Coppock
for $500 cash. The same firm
reports the sale of 62 lots in Hazelton City Addition within the
last month.
