We are all more or Ics interesved
in poultry rearing anu the question ol
egg production la a matter of Interest
and concern to a very large number ol
people in this district. Some very
useful information iB contained in the
annual report of the experimental farm
work ju.t issued by the Dominion
Government. Poultry Manager Gilchrist gives lesulu of some extended
experiments he has dcb conducting
in regard to tli. merits and dements
of tb_. cotton front hous-?, ration, and
feeding, and of breeding. The ct-suits
tabulated under tbe last named head
will be of great Interest to t_o_e who
desire to build up a prolitic egg laying
a-train. Herein is shown the great
importance of breeding only from the
e-at layers of a flock or pen.
From four of the oe.t layers in a
selected j*n of white Leghorn pullets : ^ .*
that laid an average of 106 eggs per {TM
bird, five .tull-'ts wer..- again select) I : |S4
which laid an arrage ol 104 eggs per | ^J__
head in their first year and TO in thl
second year. From three poor lay- n
in the same original pen, which produced only ro'i eggs per bird, live others were bred, wOicn produced a record of 77 eggs each in the firs: yew
and only 64 in their second year. The
d'-tail. of these experiments are of au
interesting  character;   but  the  tola-;
we have given clearly show the great
Importance of breeding from h<ns ol
prowd repute a_ good layers. It
never pays a poultry-keeper to run
second rate bird, and 11 i always eas..
to decide which are the best eg.* pro
ducera by the adoption ol the trap
n-st system. There is another point
also that Mr. Gilchrist makes Clear,
namely that tbe selection of a male
bird from good laying pari ntage is
necessary to mati frith ben of similarly good character, if satisfactoi . re
suits are to be achieved.
