THE NORTH COAST DEVOTED TO THE INTERESTS OF THE COAST DISTRICTS AND NORTHERN INTERIOR Vol. 1. No. 18. PORT SIMPSON, BRITISH COLUMBIA. — SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1907. ttftj LOCAL JOTTINGS | WmmmmmM\toMtoMmmm4WmmmmM George Rudge and family arrived on the Princess Beatrice Friday night. If you want presents, don't fail to see what the North Coast Commercial Co. has before buying. Dudoward, Wesley & Wells have on sale a $45 Graphophone, with 3.5 records, which they offer for $40. Mrs. Cawn, an employee of the Hotel Northern, left for Vancouver by the Capilano last Tuesday morning. Mr. P. R. Fleming, agent for the C. P. R. Co., was a passenger aboard the Amur, taking the round trip to Skagway. A large steamer was sighted off here last Sundav afternoon at about 4 o'clock going south. It is supposed it was the Santa Haldis. Mr. John Flewin and Mr. John Allison Campbell arrived here Friday night on the Princess Beatrice and report having had a very pleasant trip. Henry Doyle of Vancouver, came up on the Camosun Thursday, and went up the Nass to look after the Mill Bay cannery which he recently purchased. Mr. J. D. McLellan of Jedway, Queen Charlotte islands, has been spending a few weeks here, and has left for a two months' visit to his old home in Liverpool, England. J. Milner, the expert safe repairing artist, of Port Essington, came up on the Camosun, and while here did a first- class job of repairing on the Hotel Northern safe. Word has been received here that Mr. Eugene Gillmor and Miss R. West, both of Port Essington, were married a short time ago in Vancouver. The happy couple will reside in Port Essington. Everyone says the North Coast Commercial Co. is displaying the most complete line of Xmas presents ever shown in Port Simeon, and from the looks of their prices they must mean business. Mr. Picksrd, the well known mining man of Ketchikan, who was stranded here for some weeks, after a trip on Prince of Wales island, took the opportunity of returning home by the Amur. The genial Hon. William A.Wadhams paid us a welcome visit this week and lit up the town generally with his smiling countenance. The kiddies all welcomed him and hope he will be back soon. Mr. Geo. Rudge and family started from Victoria by the last trip of the Amur, and at Vancouver a doctor was summoned, who ordered them ashore there on account of Mrs. Rudge's poor health. The North Coast Commercial Co. and the Hudson's Bay Co. stores have this week opened their splendid assortment of Christmas toys and fancy goods, which surpass anything in that line as yet displayed in Port Simpson. Miss McCoskrie has almost recovered from her attack of grippe, and little Hannah Alexander is suffering from the same complaint There is, on the whole, a groat deal of sickness among the Indians at the present time. Mrs. H. Coburnof White Horse, Y.T., who has been a guest at the Hotel Northern since the last trip of the Princess May, went back to Ketchikan on the Amur to join her husband there, who is looking over some mines. They will go to California for the winter months. For the months of June, July, August, September and October, this province has derived .$666,073.77 from its timber. The returns are as follows: From timber leases, $23,743.74; from timber licenses, $536,559.45, hand-loggers' licenses, $2,6.80; timber transfers, $2,852.25; timber royalties, $100,238.33. The telegraph line is interrupted between severat points of interest, and in some places "all down," much to the disgust of the public. The big wind storm we experienced last Saturday morning did not help to improve matters, and it is reported that linemen have been iteadily at work ever sirce repairing the damage done by the storm oi the ilii!' il r ,'. . The steamer Capilano of the U.iion line, entered on the afternoon of Monday last, bringing a tewpaueoger* ai.d ■ cargo of cod from the .south. Anionic the steamer*! passengers was Mr. John Conway, constable for Prince Rupert, who was taking the round trip. The Capilano, after calling at the Naas river, returned the following night and remained till morning unloading coal. The long looked for and ever welcome R. M. S. Amur arrived Monday evening at about 7 o'clock, after a very stormy trip from Vancouver. The steamer, after discharging passengt rn and cargo, left the wharf at 1(1 o'clt <:k the same evening, and as the glass was falling rapidly, Captain McLeod anchored off here all night, leaving early the next morning for the ever dreaded Cape Fox and northern ports. A Seattle dispatch says: "In a deal consummated in New York, the Morgan- Guggenheim interests have acquired the entire plant of the Alaska Steamship company, and will at once organize a new steamship company with headquarters in Seattle. The new company will absorb the Northwestern Steamship company, and when all arrangements are completed will own and operate a fleet of eighteen steamships, to be operated from Seattle." Of local interest are the following appointments contained in the last issue of the Gazette: Frederick W. Valleau, of Hazelton, to be a stipendary magistrate; Evelyn Montague Sandilands, of Jedway, Moresby island, to be a deputy mining recorder for the Skeena river mining division, and also stipendary magistrate, and Waher Prescott, of Vancouver, to be a provincial constable with headquarters in Port Simpson. A proclamation calling the meeting of toe local legislature for January 15th, also appears. On Saturday evening last Nelson's Cornet band gave an open air concert which was much appreciated by all who attended to hear the good music, from 8:30 to 10 p. m. The night was beautiful and the new band stand looked very well, decorated with festoons of red, white and blue, and hung with colored lights. Rev. Mr. Raley opened the concert by an address, and after '' The Maple Leaf Forever" and many beautiful melodies by the band, one of the native chiefs made a speech in the Simpsean language and then the band played the "National Anthem," which brought the concert to a close. Wedding Bells. On Wednesday afternoon at the hour of 4 o'clock, a very pretty wedding took place at the Crosby Wesleyian church, when Mr. Hezakiah Wesley and Miss Kate Price were united in holy wedlock, the Rev. Mr. Raley officiating, assisted by Rev. Kcyworth. The bride looked very pretty in a gown of white duchess satin and wore the usual veil and orange blossoms, and was accompanied by six bridesmaids, also in white. Mr. Charles Dudoward acted as best man. The bride entered the church leaning upon the arm of her father, and the "Boys in Scarlet and Gold" lined up on either side of the entrance to allow the procession to pass. After the knot had been tied the band started up again, and amid the showers of rice and congratulations the invited guests, which numbered close to 200, withdrew to the Industrial school, where the wedding supper was held, and where afterwards were joined by the bridal party. The young bride was a Home girl up until the day of her marriage, and she chose for her life partner a young chief of the Simpseans. Long life to the happy couple is the hearty wish of all. TECHNICAL EDUCATION. The richer the man, the louder the bashful girl's scream. A German proverb says "You can't turn the mill with the water that has passed by." Nor can you run a busl- MM on last year's advertising. A railway for Port Simpson! Well, It has been talketd of before now, but nothing definite shaped up. However, there is bop* yet. The last issue of the Gaiette contains a notice that another application will be made to the legislative assembly, at its next session, for an act to incorporate a railway from Port Simpson to a point on the north Skeena passage, following the Work Canal. Power is also asked to connect with .and enter into a running arrangement with any other railway, u well as the usual clause relating to the receipt from governments and persons of grants of land, money, bonuses, etc., in aid of the company's undertaking. The recent Conservative convention, held in the city of Vancouver, is said to have been entirely harmoniua. It was, according to press reports, most enthusiastic, and Premier McBride and his government were heartily endorsed. Twelve important resolutions were ■edoptod .and a permanent association formed. Hereafter yearly conventions will be held. The members of the convention put themselves on record to support the continuation of the struggle for "Better Terms" until brought to a successful issue and the rights of the Province fully secured; they endorsed the action of the Government in regard to Asiatic Immigration and stand for a white man's country. The convention declared in favor of a quinquennial census and condemned the practice which has been in vogue since 1896 of delaying the Dominion elections in certain constituencies of British Columbia until after the results of the general elections are known. The question of the relinquishment of Indian reserves within the confines of the larger cities was also dealt with. Altogether, without passing any particular platform, the convention managed in the two days to transact a considerable amount of business. Widespread interest is now being taken in the subject of technical education in Canada, and no more important a question, and one which will, sooner or later, materially affect the whole of Canadian commerce and industry, not so much for commercial supremacy, but for commercial existence, or, in other words, a common means of betterment and of better relationship between the two great elements of industrial life, namely, labor and capital. In taking up the subject Industrial Canada brings out some salient features, and says: " Few movements have met with such wide acceptance as the one which is now under way, urging upon the Federal Government the necessity of appointing a commission to inquire into the whole subject of technical education and to outline a comprehensive scheme for common action throughout Canada. We see what wonderful progress Germany has made during the past thirty years in an industrial way. From a group of practically unknown states she has risen to a position of eminence among the manufacturing nations of the world. She has been able to do this because by advanced methods of organization and technical training, she has made her working unit the most effective in the world. Efficiency has been the master word by which she has conjured success from the midst of difficulties." As years advance increased competition renders the possibilities of success more difficult, not only with individuals but for the nation. Science has worked many ' changes and modern methods have replaced those of long ago. Germany has started the other nations in the formation of technical schools, the value of practical and well equipped workmen being fully demonstrated, any nation no so equipped will find the race for success in competition extremely hard. Canada has just entered on her period, of expansion, and to be able to conipejke successfully in manufactures wittr the nations of the world, no hindrance must be given to her workmen and those who in the schools are preparing for commercial life. The Canadian contends that he can take his place alongside any nation for national fitness and ability, and it remains to be seen whether that aptitude, by the institution of technical education, shall be nurtured, encouraged and developed into an active force with the greatest degree of effective result.—Mail-Herald, Revelstoke. ply for permission to leas* the following describeed Und: Commencing at a post planted near hii/h tide mark about bO feet southerly from Hudson's Bay company's N. £. corner. (The North Coast Special Service) Seattle, Dec. 4.—There arrived in Seattle on one of the last boats of the season from the islands of the Alaskan archipeligo the splendidly preserved body of an Alaskan mummy, the first to be receiveed from the north. The body was brought south by Edward Hardy, a well known pioneer Alaskan of fifteen years experience, who intends to exhibit the mummy at the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific exposition. Hardy holds strong beliefs that, in many ways, the Alaskans in prehistoric days were considerably higher in point of civilization and discovery, than history credits. At the exposition of 1909 there will be mummies of ancient Egypt, which can be compared with those from Alaska. The splendid specimen which Hardy found buried in a rocky cave on Knight's island is evidently the body of a chief or warrior of note and has probably been laying undisturbed for several hundrtid years. The body, after being embalmed, was wrapped in furs, which are still in perfect condition, the dry, cold air of the archipeligo acting as a perfect preservative. The body was stretched out on a plank, to which it was Still attached when discovered. PARLIAMENT OPENED. l-ANII ACT. Skcnrns Land District.
