THE EXHIBITION. ***» "Kutyv utter-... Miss Rita Johnston 20. .Solo Creditable Showing Made In Departments -Good Concert In the livening. All ei. The Seecond Annual Exhibition of Port Simpson was held on Thursday last in the Indian Industrial building from the hours of 2 till 6 p. m., and was formally opened by the playing of Nelson's Cornet band and an address by Mr. W. Manson, government agent. The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion with streamers of the national colors, wreathing of evergreens and flowers. The tea room, which was a feature in itself, was most tastily set off by dainty tables, Japanese screens and palms, reminding one of the modern cafe, and where a number of the young ladies of the committee were dispensing tea and cake during the entire afternoon. The exhibits, which were wonderful, considering the population of Port Simpson, and the lack of outside support, were displayed to full advantage on tables running to almost the full length of the hall, and covering the walls and surrounding stalls. Mr. Doyd Young deserves great credit for the interest taken in the fair, and his booth afforded great pleasure to all and especially to the younger visitors present, considering his fine collection of fine dolls. Another corner of interest, and well worthy of mention, was a beautifully Arranged and large collection of picture postal cards displayed by Messrs. Dudo- ward. Wells & Wesley. Don't lie Cross" Miss Williscroft "Japanese Love Song" Mrs. Johnston "Cod £ave the King," The entire community wish to extend thanks and heartiest congratulations to Rev. Mr. Haley, president, and to the secretary, Mr. Johnston, for the very able manner in which they directed and controlled all things pertaining to the exhibition, which proved a decided success in every way. WANTS A CABLE. I'mspectors ol Queen Charlotte (Iroup Petition the Government. Largely signed petitions drawing attention to the urgent wants and requirements of the Queen Charlotte islands, recently the scene of unusual mining activity, will be forwarded to the provincial and Dominion governments this week. Copies will also be presented to Mr.Wm. Sloan, M. P. for the district. Both petitions bear the signature of every prospector and fisherman on the Islands, as well as numerous non-reesi- dents who own large interests there. The one addressed to the provincial government is a very elaborate affair. It asks that a permanent mining recorder's office be established for the Queen Charloote group, pointing out that pros- peectorR are subjected to heavy expense and loss of time in visiting the present district mining recorder's office here. The petition also asks the government to transfer all records now in the Port Simpson office to the proposed mining recorder's office on the islands. The petition further requests the government to appoint justices of the peace The pupils of the public schools # »"d to build a system of trails in order Port Simpson and Georgetown were *" «"**™-»» naw «*"*» «««■"•. represented by very fine displays of paintings and drawings and great praise is due to the wonderful way in which Mr3. Henry and Harry, returned from White Horse early Saturday morning, where they have boen operating a mine at Carcross. As a result of Saturday morning's terrific, thunder storm, the telegraph lines are interrupted between several points of interest on the Yukon division including the Prince Rupert branch. The steamer Venture came in very late on Tuesday evening, and after taking on salmon at the Naas, and calling at Goose Bay mine, returned here 'die following night and cleared for Vancouver. The steamer Vadso returned from Ketchikan last Monday evening and on leaving for the south saluted the Princess Royal at the main entrance of the harbour as the latter boat was arriving from the south. By next summer we expect to have a new hotel here on the hill between the Church of England rectory and the doctor's residence. It is supposed that construction will start on the new building in the early spring. Mr. Horace Kirby, of Port Essington, has arrived quite unexpectedly in town. No one seems to know the object of his trip unless he has been sent by our neighboring town as a representative to the exhibition. Mrs. Noble and Miss Phillips of Port EBsington, came up a few days ago per Capilano, and took in the fair and concert. They returned by the Princess i Koyal Saturday 'nflniing. Miss Sarah. Royal. As the Royal was pulling out from the dock this morning a would-be passenger was seen frantically chasing down the wharf, but despite his evident distress and heart-breaking eries, the Royal proceeded on her way. Did you ever get left. Miss Sarah Johnston, of George Road, Victoria, is at present a guest of Mrs. Harding. Miss Johnston arrived from Port Essington by the Princess Royal, and after her visit here will return to her sister, Mrs. Bailley, on the Skeena, before returning home. Mr. C. L. Cullin, late of the staff of the Atlin Claim, was one of the arrivals on the Royal today. He reports the Claim closed down for the winter. Mr. Cullin contemplates a visit to Jedway on the Amur, always supposing she does not play any more little tricks as per last trip. Regarding the latest fashions from Paris and London, the ladies will be anxious to knew that sleeves are longer, skirts are shorter, and coats tend toward greater length. The Kimona sleeve is giving place to what is known as the " But" sleeve. As to the prevailing color, purple still contiues popular. Mr. C. H. Dickie of Duncans. B. C, one of the principals of The Portland Canal Mining & Development Co., accompanied by Mr. Elensdorf, mining expert, arrived this morning on 'the Royal from the north and proceeded on the tug Native to the head of the canal to look over and report on the company's property. Mr. Charles Dudoward, of "Eagle House," with two partners, will open an art furnishing store next month opposite the firm of the North Coast Commercial Company. The new store will, with its varied assortment of goods, carry a very fine line of picture postal cards, which in itself will prove quite an addition to the place. James Mowat, master mechanic for the Alaska Industrial Co. at Sulzer, Prince of Wales island, was a passenger on the Princess royal en route north on her last trip. Mr. Mowatt was formerly with the B. C. Copper company at Greenwood, at the time Paul Johnson wa3 superintendent, and went north with him on the construction of the Hadley smelter. R. There is no part of Canada in which the true Canadian spirit can be more fully awakened and fruitfully thrive than in our great West. Endowed with a population that represents the cream and flower of the many lands and climes from which those who people it have come, it offers by nature vast material resources to those who will legitimately work for them. Optimism should be at the heart of all who essay the great west and the feeling of sectionalism should be forgotten as we look afar to the boundaries of this great land .and realize its possibilities and im- mensities. Many people coming out here are imbued with the idea that their native land is the best place, and comparing conditions there with Canada, forgetting probably that the very newness of Canada may be some cause for consideration when making comparisons, which, under such conditions, are iMAi^s ear Iaeb «dini,«, kava fmind in th& west an extended and enlarging horizon, breathe a stronger air and imbibe the enterprise and the hope in the optimism of Canada's Great West, and above all the true spirit of Canadianism. As we nib shoulders with all kinds of people, striving more or less to aid the development of Canada and make a home for themselves and families for generations to come, we should for the nonce forget all except that we are sons of Canada and working in spirit, be it in the field, the workshop, the counting house, of office. This Canadian spirit should be as broad as the flag to which we owe our alliegance, and as we welcome all Xers who are desirable settlers and will work for the development and prosperity of Canada, it is our bounden duty to instil in them a spirit of true loyalty and devotion to the land of their .adoption. We should all take our part aad share in the government and well being of our country, and thus act the part of good citizens .and exhibit true patriotism that makes a nation and a people, and thus by example create a spirit of emulation. Above all it is the dfty of Canadians to take part in all public matters, and not be inclined to confine ourselves, our thoughts, our time and attention only to the consideration of our private affairs; rather let us make sacrifices and do our share as citizens, else we will be recreant to our great trust. The ambition to take part in public, municipal and provincial affairs should be encouraged in the rising youth that he may be ably fitted to caiTy on the great work of empire building commenced by his predecessors. There is no greater exhibition of selfishness extant than that which we find in men who sit back and take no I»rt whatever in municipal affairs, and yet at ell times are ready and willing to criticize, grumble and complain of those in authority. The true Canadian spirit |s to see that right and justice prevails, and moreover to always remember that we prove ourselves worthy offsprings of the Mothwland and emulate those who labored, fought and died for God and the right.-Mail-Herald, Revel- .■ftofce,' ■ss=m=;s====;= EDITORIAL NOTES. gress of the next parliament, which is called for early in January. The needs of this portion of the province are many, and urgent. The construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific railway will > undoubtedly attract thousands of newcomers, and provision must be made for the building of highways, bridges and trails, the proper policing and administration of justice, and the hundred and one other things that come with the advent of population.
