THE NORTH COAST DEVOTED TO THE INTERESTS OF THE COAST DISTRICTS AND NORTHERN INTERIOR Vol. 1. No. 9. PORT SIMPSON, BRITISH COLUMBIA. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5, 1907. »M>»*»Mcft)t LOCAL JOTTINGS | *>***P+pr kMr********** r-s-44 For Tracing Cloth go to the R. Boyd Young Co. Miss Ida Clarke, matron of the Crosby Girls' Home, is visiting friends at Port E-isington. Mr. Williscroft and Miss Williscroft returned from a trip to Vancouver at the beginning of the week. The H. M. S. Shearwater looked in on Monday evening last, but disappeared as mysteriously as she came. The steamer Rustler, Captain Jenner, entered a few days ago with a big tow of lumber from the Georgetown mill. The Venture was delayed at the Naas river during her last trip on account of the big shipment of salmon that awaited her there. A regular sitting of the County court of Atlin, His Honor Judge Young, will be held at Port Simpson on or about the 18th inst. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Campbell, late of California, entertained a number of their new friends here the other evening on the event of their wedding an- niversery. The Princess Royal had aboard 250 southbound passengers Friday morning, and those boarding the steamer here were obliged to take their own blankets with them. The steamer Lottie N. arrived from the north Friday morning, towing an immense scow with a logging party aboard from Portland canal. They proceeded on their way southbound. At a meeting at the Methodist Mission last. Tuesday evening it was decided thai, preparations be commenced to organize the Second Annual Fair in the records of the history of Port Simpson. Mr. and Mrs. Mills, who expected to leave by the Princess Roynl for Vancouver, could not obtain berths aboard the steamer, so decided to await the departure of the Princess Beatrice or Camosun. George Rudge, Colonel Montgomery and William Lord were out fishing last week near the Clam reef, at the main entrance of the harbor, and caught some of the largest codfish ever seen on this coast. Mr. Gordon Lockerby, Jr., left last Friday morning by the Princess Royal for Prince Rupert, where he is to be employed by the Grand Trunk Railway Co. His many friends here wish him every success in his new work. Herbert Young has been Gazetted recorder for the Skeena River mining division. Mr. Young was for eight years mining recorder and registrar of the county court at Atlin and is an experienced and competent official. Mr. John Flewin has erected a fine home of his own at North Port Simpson, and is moving all his household effects from the government house here to the new home across the water. The family expect to move over shortly. There was a very heavy rain storm experienced here last Thursday night, which was something unusual for this time of the year. The previous night the wind registered at times during the small hours three miles in five minutes. Last Monday Messrs. J. T. Hillis, Wm. Brewer and Mr. Bryant arrived in town by the Princess Royal and boarded the steamer Native here for Hidden Creek mine on Observatory inlet. The party returned the following Thursday and caught the Royal going south on Friday morning. The citizens of Port Simpson were very much disappointed at not being able to attend the ball and hanquet given by the citizens of Port Essington last Wednesday in honor of member Sloan, but owing to the changing of the date it was utterly impossible for any to attend from here. From an item in the Montreal Star it is learned that at the matriculation ex- aniH. at McGill University, last month, Mr. Wa!'er R. Flewin, second son of Government Agent Flewin, anil formerly a pupil of our esteemed public school teacher, Mrs. J. M. H. Hurtling, passed with Hying colors in applied science, French and chemistry. He was one of the original locators of the copper property at Maple Bay, Portland Canal, now owned by the Brown-Alaska company, and has taken up the study of mining engineering. Simpson is proud of you, Walter. Mr. William Lord, manager of the Port Nelson cannery on the Naas, was a passenger for Vancouver by the Princess Royal. Mr. Lord has had a very prosperous season at the cannery, and is returning home in very good spiritB. Mr. Grove, agent for the Brown- for the Brown-Alaska Co. at Maple Bay, has been a guest at the Hotel Northern during the past week. Mr. Grove came down on a tug and expected the steamer Marion to arrive from Ketchikan and convey him to the Portland canal, but as the Marion failed to put m an appearance, he returned by the Camosun. Messrs. R. E. Williams and R. W. Argue were in town this week and made us a pleasant call. They are just out from the Bulkley. Mr. Williams has opened the Pioneer real estate office of the valley at Telkwa, where he will be prepared: to furnish strangers with correct and reliable information and will keep on file up-to-date maps of all lands in the district. Mr. Argue has erected a number of good frame buildings at Telkwa the past summer, among tvhich were several cottages, butcher shop, general store, printing office, laundry, storehouses and stables. He says Tolkwa is the beginning of a big town and the hot^l there the bes£ in the interior. TO PUT ON A KESE8VE. Government WIH Discourage Speculation In Public Lunds. Following out the policy of the Provincial government inaugurated last fall, a reserve has been placed upon a belt of land containing some 4,500,000 acres in the Cariboo and Cassiar districts. Recently a reserve was placed upon another large strip of territory in the Nechacho district. The policy of the government is to discourage speculation, but to do everything in their power to encourage prospective pre-emptors or homesteaders. For this reason the land mentioned is still open to pre-emption. Official notice will be given in the Provincial Gazette setting forth that a belt of land 40 miles in width and approximately 170 miles in length, in the Cariboo and Cassiar districts is reserved from sale, lease, license or other disposition under the Land act excepting by pre-emption. The land is more particularly described as commencing at the intersection of the western boundary of the block of land selected by the Dominion government with the Peace river; thence following the Peace river and Parsnip river to the confluence of the Pack river, and thence following the Pack river to the point where said Pack river leaves McLeod lake, and extending for a distance of 20 miles on either side of the said rivers throughout the above districts. - Ex. Pleased With Portland Canal. "Mr. C. H. Dickie, on his return from Portland Canal, where he had been for some time looking after the work on the properties owned by the Portland Canal Mining Co., reports very favorably on the outlook,'' says the Cowichan Leader. "Very rich ore has been found; native silver is disseminated all through the rock. Assays show very high values and the development work shows that the vein is strong, with the appearance of proving a big mine. The ore is rich enough, so that the company intend rawhidjng as soon as the snow falls and will continue as long as conditions are favorable. The Portland Canal country, like many other rich countries, is much in need of transportation facilities, and cannot properly be estimated until this work is done, the richness of which will undoubtedly very soon influence the government and others, and these means of advancing the deveop- ment of the country will be constructed. NEWS OF STEWART. Some Items of Interest from Thai I.Ike Camp. (iovernnwnt Hil'lic. I inlsheJ. (The North Coast Special Service) STKWART, B. C, Sept. :«i. The Portland Canal Mine and development Co. is making good progress with the work of opening up theirclaims. The main tunnel is now in 110 feet, the values have more than doubled in thai distance, anil the ore body widened. In the lower tunnel they are in about 50 feet. On the fiypsy they are sinking and are down about 60 feet, where they are in 3 feet of ore which carries exceptionally high gold values. Messrs. Wallace & MoranviUe have sold their properties to Wm. Pigott, of Victoria, who also obtained an option on the Sunbeam. The government bridge is practically completed. It is 1,750 feet long and has three 60-foot spans in it. The building of this bridge by the government is proof of its belief in the future of the camp. Several properties have been bonded lately, the owners being well satisfied with the values obtained. A new strike two feet wide has been made on the Rangoon and Bandolier claims on American creek. An average assay of this went 350 ounces silver and 10 per cent copper. Mr. Noel Humphreys, P. L. S., of Vancouver, has had an outfit in surveying the balance of the Stewart Land Co.'s townsite and several mineral claims on Glacier creek. MAPLE BAY NOTES. Brown-Ala: ka Co. Dolnit Development Work and Installing New Machinery. C. D. Grove, superintendent of the Brown-Alaska mine at Maple Bay, Portland canal t>r>ent ,a few dayjj in town this week, ;ihd has the following to say of that camp: "The Brown-Alaska Co. are doing extensive development work at their Outsiders mines. They are driving three drifts on this big vein, opening up the ore body for 300 feet in depth between levels and some 300 feet more depth to surface. The main drift is in near 1,000 feet and will be pushed ahead with the other drifts some 600 feet further this winter. No ore shipments will be made until their smelter at Hadley is completed, where extensive improvements are being made at present. The ore is being left in the stopes and ready for shipment whenever the smelter requires it, "The company is also installing an additional 100 h. p. boiler, 175 h. p. engine, 75 k. w. generator, heater, etc. An electric power transmission line is being built to the mine from the power station, and new electric machine drills will be put into commission in all the levels within the ensuing month. The present compressor plant will be utilized for the stuping machines. The mines and beach will be electrically lighted." Wm. Noble has completed his large store building at Maple Bay and has gone south for a general stock. This store will undoubtedly outfit the prospectors in this vicinity, as a complete lines of such supplies will be carried. He has also completed a residence for himself. Hotel Arrivals. JA.MKS PAPPACKMl'S. James \\\ .Smith, Agent. Dated August 17, 1907. sep 21 THE COPPER SITUATION. After several months of a booming market, copper stocks and the copper market have relapsed at a rapid rate. The opinion of copper men is that the present era of low prices cannot rule long. The surplus iroduct accumulated because metal usjrs refrained, so far as possible, from buying in an excessively high market except for most urgent demands, will now rapidly decline with lowered prices because greater demand will arise in a thousand ways. The decision of some of the large producers to curtail output for a time pending restoration of the balance, will also hasten the desired end. It is believed that presently the price of the brown metal will steadily move up considerably but without touching the high levels of a few months ago, and at such a satisfactory plane remain steady for a time. With the decline in the price of copper a marked decline w as bound to come in the shares of the producing mines regardless of dividends. From the great Amalgamated down the decline ha3 been marKSBana generalatBrigthe lint, and the wise ones are now taking up the offerings of those who want to quit. It is the old story, the wise ones buy low and sell high, the lambs buy high, and then when the reaction comes hasten to let go. With the evident appreciation in metal will come higher prices for paving stocks, and when they come the sellers of today will be buyers. It is only readjustment after all, the readjustment of supply and demand on the one hand and of business acumen and speculative dabbling on the other.—Greenwood Times. SKKKNA LAND DISTRICT.
