WOMAN SUFFRAGE
In further comments on the
subjeci ol woman suffrage the
Toronto Giobe asks: "Do the
women want the franchise? Or
is theperiodical clamor and agitation an insignificant affair in
which only a few restless but
insignificant individuals are in
terested? Large numbers of
the women who voted on New
Year's day did so because they
were called for or persuaded.
Others resisted all persuasion
argument and appeal. Now
what excuse can be made for
giving womenthe parlamentary
franchise if they are indifferent
to the municipal and educational franchise? What hope is
there that they will cate about
questions oi tariff and transpor
tation if they care nothing for
their right to vote on questi ms
of temperance and moral reform? Surely if anything
would call out the votes of the
women who have homes or
who hope to have homes, or
who think about the homes of
other people, it is the chance to
close forever thirty bar rooms
and ten liquor stores. If they
deliberately refuse that chance
is not the inference warranted
that they do not want the fran
chise, and that the woman
suffrage agitators have been
talking without their knowledge
or authority?"

ITOTICE.
How deadly a poison the
nicotine of the cigarette is, is
thus described by Dr. J' J'
Kellog of Battle Creek, Mich.t
as the results of experiments
made by him: "A few months
ago 1 had all the nicotine removed from a cigerette, making a solution of it. I injected
half the quantity into a frog,
with the effect that the frog
died almost instantly, The
rest was administered to another frog with like effect.
Both frogs were full grown and
of average size. The conclu
sion is evident that a single
cigarette contains poison that
will kill two frogs. A boy who
smokes twenty cigarettes a day
has inhaled enough poison to
kill forty frogs. Why does the
poison not kill the boy? It
does kill kirn. If not immed
iately, he will die sooner or
later of weak heart, Bright's
