N.E. corner dated Feb. IB. Stanlep Burke, 42—Feb. 15, '11 Joseph Ronayne, agent A Trapper's Experience in the Spruce Lake Country In Which he Loses His Dog and Narrowly Escapes with His Life—Still Undaunted he Returns to His Camp at Spruce Lake, Bridge River Here is an incident which if it does nothing else, certainly brings to the minds' eye, the kind of "stuff" the true men of the hills are made up of. Bill Wilkinson the trapper and prospector, who was in town for a few days last week from his cabin on Spruce lake, Upper Gunn creek, a distance of about 75 miles from Lillooet, tells of a harrowing escape from death by a snowslide. Bill's 'grub' supply ran out which necessitated his making a trip to town; he attempted to come down the main Ty- aughton through the upper canyon, for the main Bridge river, his destination being Grant White's camp. About two o'clock in the afternoon, Bill and his dog ' 'Dewey" were travelling along on a- bout four feet of snow, when a slide started about a quarter of a mile above them, Bill could see that he had to 'make time' and called to his only companion to hurry, but snowshoeing in loose mushy snow is bad and slow going and before the man and dog had gone less than a hundred feet the slide was upon them, it was not a fast running slide, but one of those easy, slow - running slides, slow but nevertheless persistent in its overwhelming powers of destruction. FIGHT FOR LIFE As the slide caught Bill, although he is a heavy man of about two hundred pounds, and powerfully built, he walked it, and describes it as "similar to treading water in a lake," three times Bill went down and came on top, and after calling to his dog Dewey again to hurry, Bill got caught up to his shoulders in the mushy snow, then commenced the battle for life in earnest and only by the most excruciating efforts did Bill manage to free himself from his showshoes, obtain them again, and get to safety. As soon as he could pull himself together his first thought was "Dewey," but alas, Bill's heart nearly broke when he found that his dog was under the slide, he dug and probed, whistled and shouted for 'Old Dewey,' and PRINTING WHEN YOU WANT PRINTING THE BETTER KIND Delivered When Promised and Correct When Delivered The Lillooet Advance Lillooet, B.C. although he camped close to the slide for a whole day, without victuals, poor old Dewey was not found. The next best friend to a true human friend is a good clog and poor Bill feels very keenly the loss of Dewey who has travelled with him for the last five years through thick and thin, when luck was out and luck was in. After a very ardous trip he arrived at Grant Whites and to mention the fact that troubles never come singly he found one of his pack horses dead, through eating- frozen rushes. Bill, whose pet name is "Cyclone Bill" is still undaunted and returned to his trapping last Sunday, he also owns mineral claims in close vicinity to the strike of Bell and White on "Claw Hammer Ridge" and " Two Spoon Basin," between Tyaughton and Gunn creek and intends to prove this coming summer that he has a good thing in the shape of mining. We sympathize with Bill in his sad loss and wish him the best of luck. Land Purchase Notices LILLOOET LAND DISTRICT District oE Lillooet Take notice that Alexander C.
