 THE
ADVANCE
Vol. I No. 30
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1911
House of Lords
Remain Firm
London. — The announcement
by Chamberlain makes it certain
that the House of Lords will not
be scared into abolishing itself
by mere threats and a big fight
fight will be the result. "The
News," a Liberal organ says:
"The Lords, like Chamberlain,
may dwell in a fog and feed on
illusions. If the Lords fail in
their duty the administration will
create new Peers and the anti-
Lords bill will become law. That
is as certain as the rising of the
sun."
Local News
Mr. Carson's funeral takes
place tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Missses C. and V. Seabring
arrived home on Thursday.
J. C. Cable of Lillooet ranch
came into town last evening and
reports the trotters doing fine.
The Lytton stage left about
2.30 this morning for Lytton to
accommodate passengers.

coast this mornjng, by way of

Fishing Village
Carried Away
Helsingfor, Norway.----An entire fishing village of 250 men,
which had been established on
the ice outside Ekorko Sound,
was carried out to sea in a gale
last Friday night. The disaster
was not discovered until morning
when the village was already out
of sight. Boats have been sent
to the rescue, but none have yet
returned or seen by any passing
vessels.
Lumbermen Convene
Ottawa. — British Columbia
Lumbermen holding their annual
convention here announced that
they would withdraw all opposition to reciprocity. While it is
thought that shingles should be
free, the reduction of duty from
fifty to thirty cents is certainly a
distinct gain.
Brutal Hockey
Montreal. — The "Canadians"
defeated the "Wanderers'" 9 to 2
in the most brutal hockey game
ever witnessed. At one time
only two Wanderers were on the
ice, the others being penalized.
Accepts Offer
Neepawa, Man.—Rev. Iran A.
R. Macdonald, vicar of St. James'
has accepted the offer of the
Lord Primate of the Scottish
Episcopal Church of the rectorship of St. Mary Magdalene,
Dundee, Scotland.

completed their Vancouver to
Lillooet survey and gone to Vancouver, they left on Thursday by

 o
Pioneer Passes Away
Died—At his home on Pavilion
Mountain, on Thursday, Feb. 9,
Robert Carson, Sr.
Mr. Carson was born in Scotland, emigrated to the United
Stated at the early age of 12
years, came to British Columbia
in 1864, and eventually took up
land at Pavilion where he re-
mnined till called away.
Much sympathy is expressed
for Mrs. Carson and family at
this, their time of bereavement.
Clashes With
The Troops
Rome. -Some very serious and
distressing clashes with the
troops and a dozen cities in Italy
occupied, is the result of the
mass meetings to protest against
the high food rates and the exorbitant rents. Thousands of
families are on the verge of
starvation, and widespread outbreaks are inevitable. The government is blamed for the pic-
vailing conditions.
Convent Destroyed
Montreal. - The convent school
of the sisters of St. Anne was
destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Only two hundred children were in the school at the
time of the conflagation, all
made good their escape. The
usual attendance at the school is
nine hundred.
Church Union
Toronto. —After a vigorous discussion the Presbytry of Toronto
by the vote of 35 to 31 disapproved of the basis of Church
Union as accepted by the general
assembly.
Canada Attractive
Ottawa. —The total number of
Britishers who emigrated from
the Pritish Isles during eleven
montls of 1910 was 234,821.
More than one half came to this
country.
May Resign
Naples. David Lloyd George,
British Chancellor, is suffering
from a nervous breakdown and
may be compelled to resign his
portfolio.
Bonspiel Opens
Winnipeg.— The annual bonspiel opened on Wednesday, with
162 rinks entered. A lively time
is expected.

One Thousand
Men Are Idle
Hamilton, Ont.-One thousand
men have 1 een thrown out of
work in Hamilton as a result of
t're proposed tariff changes, for
the Oliver Plow Company, of
South Lend, Ind., which is erecting a one million dollar plant in
this city, wired its contractors
here to suspend operations until
the reciprocity riuestions had
been finally settled, and it is i. -
timated that if the duty is wiped
off farm impliments the Oliver
Company will not manufacture
in this city.
Dominion Fisheries
Ottawa.— At the cabinet meeting the appointment of Mr. F.
H. Cunningham, now federal
government superintendent of
fish culture, as chief Dominion
inspector of fisheries in British
Columbia, with headquarters at
New Westminister, was finally
passed. Mr. Cunningham will
go west in March.
Newton, Mass.—Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward, the author,
died last week.
General Cronje Dead
Klerksdrop, South Africa. Feb.
4.— General Piete Cronje the
noted Boer leader is dead here.
General Cronje commanded
the Western army of the South
African Republic in the -ecent
war. The General and his forces
were eventually brought to bay
on the Modder river, near Paar-
deberg, where General Cronje
defended himself for nine days
in a position that was impregnable to assault, but greatly exposed to artillery fire from the
surrounding heights.
After suffering loss to such a
degree that his men would not
endure any longer, Cronje surrendered on Februay 27. 1900,
the anniversary of Majuhu. The
British forces had drawn in closer each night, and a heavy bombardment had been kept up. At
3 o'clock in the morning, they
rushed the enemy's trenches and
three hours later the Boers laid
down their arms unconditionally.
The prisoners .numbered about
4000, Cronje was a member of
the Executive council of the
Transvaal Republic and Chief
Native Commissioner. He was
born in 1835. The Lillooet Advance
