LOCAL BREVITIES
St. Petersburg.— The sinking
of an over-crowded ferry boat on
the Volga near Uglitch is reported. Thirty persons were drowned.
 0
Nome, Alaska.— A stampede
has started to the Good News
Bay district, south of the Kus-
kokwim, where rich placer g'nd
has been discovered. Several
hundred prospectors have gone
from the Iditarod and many are
going from here.
London.—The further census
returns show that there are
1,178,317 females in excess of
males in Great Britain. Figures,
however, would be greatly reduced if soldiers and sailors a-
broad were counted. Women
continue to increase faster than
men, as they have consist-
tently done since 1821.
Toronto. — The police magistrate today dismissed the charge
of violation of the Lord's Day
Act preferred against musicians
amusement parks here, holding
that sacred Sunday band concerts
were within the law whether
musicians are Canadians, Americans or Italians, the one stipulation being that no "rag-time" be
played.
Stewart.—Mr. Alister Robertson of Victoria is bringing up a
party to survey into quarter sections the 30,000 acres of land the
Government reserved at the mou
th of the Nass for pre-emption.
This work, which was to have
been carried out by Mr. Robertson last year, was abandoned
owing to the truculent attitude
of the Nass Indians.
 o
Winnipeg. — Temperatures of
between 80 to 90 were recorded
all over the prairie west of here
yesterday, the highest being 95
at Hamiota, Man. It was a
sweltering night, the mercury
remaining around 70. The intense heat, following plentiful
rains, is bringing the crops
along at wonderful rate and the
farmers are already facing the
problem of unusually heavy straw
and wondering where the 40,000
harvesters will come from.
Mr. S. A. Rodgers, the well
known Cariboo merchant and
politician, died of syncope at Bar-
kerville last week.
High School
Rev. H. W. Bromwich has been
away this week presiding over
the Rural Entrance Examinations
for High school. The examinations were held in Ashcroft.
There were only five candidates
this year, two boys from Ashcroft, and three girls from Lytton. Rev. Bromwich states that
all the pupils did very creditable
work.**
Wedding
Pavilion Mountain was the
scene of a very happy event last
Thursday when Miss Edith Carson was united in marriage to
Mr. C. Pollard. The nuptial
knot was tied by Rev. Jas. Turner, late Superintendent of the
Methodist Chinese missions in
B.C. Only the immediate friends
and relatives were present. After
the wedding the happy couple
left by Mr. Stewart's auto for
coast where the honeymoon will
be spent. The Advance joins in
wishing Mr. and Mrs. Pollard a
very prosperous life.
Accident
i
Last Sunday an unfortunate
accident befel a freighter named
S. Cook. As he was endeavoring
to make Walker's cutoff, this side
of Boston flats, it appears that
j the leaders instead of taking the
bank so that the eight horses behind, and two heavily loaded
freight-wagons could make the
curve, they became unmanageable with the result that both
wagons and the two driving
horses were turned over into the
bank. Rev. W. Bromwich, who
had only just gone out of sight
says, the crash was awful. For
a moment he hardly dare look
round but as he did was relieved
to see both drivers had jumped,
and though two of the horses
were pinned under the tongue
they were gotten out unhurt.
Though both wagons are completely turned over it appears
the damage will not far exceed
$100.
Geo. Hurley is busy these days
putting up hay.
Read, mark, and learn the
Health Act on page two of this
issue.
G. Rebagliati, (Butch) drove a
'special' in from Lytton on Wednesday and returned Thursday.
The youngsters are showing a keen interest in Phair's
garden next the telegraph office;
Peanuts are growing there.
Geo. Barr is erecting a 40x40
ft. bungalow for F. Kinder, on
the Terrace Hall estate at Seton
lake.
R. McKay of New Westminster arrived in town Wednesday
on his way to Pemberton, for
which place, he left Friday morning.
G. W. Graham, manager of the
Pemberton Hatchery arrived in
in town en route for Pemberton:
he left town on Friday morning.
It was a very pleasant party of
picnicers who left, for Bridge
river last Sunday; they returned
on Monday and report having
spent a jolly time, bringing home
an abundance of strawberries
and pleasant experiences.
J. Birch, rancher of the North
Fork arrived in town on Friday

The many friends of Walter
Keeble. the genial host of the
Baillie hotel at Lytton, will regret to hear that having completed the sale of his hotel to
Hugh McGuire formorely of Aspen Grove and the boundary
country, he will leave shortly for
