THE ADVAN Vol. I No. 36 SATURDAY, MARCH 25, 1911 $2.00 Per Year LOCAL BREVITIES Wm. Saul, S.M. is in town dealing out justice. Alfred Smith of Clinton, left for that point on Friday. Chas Manuel of Phcenix B.C. is among the visitors to our town. J. K. Moore, road superintendent of Clinton arrived in town on Wednesday. R. Haney, foreman of I illooet Bridge construction, arrived from Quesnel this week. C. W. Gamble arrived Saturday to examine the Lillooet ' uspen- sion bridge. Joe Fletcher, hunters guide of Leon's creek paid a visit to town in the early part of the week. Fred. Kinder and his daughter "Dot," of Terrace Hall ranch returned home from the coast this week. E. D- Nelson, engineer of the H.S.N.R., left for Vancouver in company with Ray Elliott, after finishing the survey of the flats on Lillooet river. James Dickey, Sr. came into town from the 15-mile house on the Ashcroft stage; he reports that Moses Foster is already drill- in seed with three teams. Capt. Bonser and Mr. H. Puer, visited Lillooet last Sunday and took great care to see all the different sights. Bonser is well known on the Skeena and Fraser rivers as a daring captain. The gang of men working west on the new road about a mile out of town, are doing a good work by gravelling the grade. There are six men and two teams working and a great improvement will be made in the appearance, also in the better mode of travel for the general public. Rev. R. Reeves held services in St. Mary's Church here last Sunday. We understand this was Mr. Reeves's last service among us. Mr. Reeves, being a bright, broad-minded man, will be much missed by the community. Our loss is another's gain. TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS If Springfield, 111.—Following the cessation of all trouble at the Northwestern Coal Co's. mine, Governor Denen has announced that the militia will be withdrawn at once. Winnipeg. — Immigration Commissioner Walker reports immigration into Canada during the last ten months was 261,000 of which the Uunited States contributed 102,000. Kiel, Germany. — Germany's first turbine battleship, named The Kaiser, was launched yesterday, the birthday of the Emperor William and was christened by the Empress Augusta Victoria. High Bar News Billy Tremble and his partner Goodwin have discovered a free milling quartz ledge near their old prospect on Watson Bar creek They expect to do considerable development work this season. Billy is an old Lillooet boy and was known as the A.P.A. Kid, and we wish him luck. A. McDonald, M.P.P. has been interested in the property for some years. I The timbers of the tressels for the new cable ferry at High Bar are now on the ground at Dougal McDonald's, and he has started at once to complete same. Due credit must be given to Dougal for the efficient manner in which he has manipulated things appertaining to this necessary accomodation to the travellers of this country. Cecil Edmunds of Vancouver paid a visit to Barney O'Rourke of French Bar creek. Mr. Edmunds is interested in land in this district. Tate, Junr. is erecting a new dwelling house on his land at the mouth of French Bar creek. Subscribe for your local paper and get the district news. The new bar at the Victoria hotel is now complete and is without doubt one of the finest bars in the Upper country. The painters are busy on the outside of the building. Paris. —With eleven passengers aboard, Leiut. Breguet broke all records by flying three miles in a biplane. MINING NEWS _hl Gahanna, Ohio. — Headed by Mayor Dawson, a possee surrounded five safe blowers in underbrush near here. Two robbers were wounded in the fight which followed but all finally escaped. New York.— Despatches from Mexico city quote a prominent Mexican diplomat as admitting that the secret treaty between Japan and Mexico will be immediately terminated by mutual consent. Victoria. — The Japanese are being starved out of Manchuria as a result of the plague. The report comes that if the plague is not quickly suppressed the majority of Japanese business men will be forced from the country. Lisbon.—Owing to persistent rumors of assasination plots special guards have been detailed to watch over President Braga and the Cabinet. The army is said to be split into fractions and dissatisfaction with the President's state affairs is widespread. Victoria. — That trouble was likely in China was the report made to Japan by Mr. Ijuien, minister to China on his return to Tokio. The Japanese Minister thought that Japan should watch the inauguration of the new China Parliament in 1912. He said there were in China numerous secret political bodies likely to stir up revolutionary war. Th; •. brought some good dust down last week and presume that this coming week will give a fail estimate of the value of their property. Quite a number of prospectors are intending this spring to go from Clinton, in to the Contact of the Limestones and Granite, between the Gravel pit and the 83 - mile house, Cariboo road. Very rich quartz specimens of float have been found in this locality; this is the incentive which encourages the prospectors to investigate the field. With the summer close at hand comes the need of bestowing attention on the condition of back yards, lanes and vacant spaces. The health department, of course, will have something to say in the matter, but without the co-operation of the tenant or property owner the needed result is difficult of accomplishment. This is a work in which all can do their share toward enhancing the healthf ulness of the community, and winning the respect of every visitor to the town. It helps materially, too, in the education of the children, and casts about them an environment both wholesome and refreshing. We cannot overestimate the beneficial influence of tidiness and cleanliness, and in the building of a good city there is no time like the present to institute a campaign of this sort.
