LOCAL BREVITIES J. Birch, rancher from North Fork was down last Saturday for supplies. M. R. Eagleson and P. Mays drove over to the 15-mile house ranch on Thursday. The Clinton Spring Assize, civil and criminal, is set for Tuesday, May 2nd. The Seton Lake Sawmill is working full blast under the supervision of the owner W. S. Duguid. Alec McLeod is in charge of one of the gangs on the construction of the new wagon road at Mission mountain. Joseph Shuster arrived from Vancouver on Tuesday and is at present visiting at Mr. and Mrs. I. Hunt's ranch. The Seton Lake Hatchery has started work for the seaon. Five men being employed at the present time. Thos. Burdette has just completed the installation of the water system, tapping the main opposite his house in the West end. Rev. V. N. Thoren of Seattle left on Saturday for the coast for the purpose of securing a ' large pump, to be used in the new shaft on the Jesperson lease on Cayoosh creek. Tom Manson arrived with W. Manson's pack-train of twenty head from Dougal McDonald's ranch at Big Bar, for the season's run of tourist and hunting parties. Mrs. J . and Miss S. A. Boyd of the .3-mile house Cariboo road drove into town Thursday evening and are the guests of Mrs. Eagan and Mrs. Duguid. They will remain here for at least one week. J. B. Uren arrived from Vancouver Tuesday, and reports a pleasant trip. He has disposed of his property here to Paul Mc- Masters, who is well known in Lillooet and it is expected that Paul will take up his residence here in the near future and start business. Mr. Uren is opening a business in Vancouver; we wish, him the best of success in his enterprise. Toronto.—Four thousand five hundred, settlers have left for the west on the C. P. Railway since March the first. Fernie, B. C. - Quiet reigns throughout the district affected by the labor dispute. The International board is standing by the miners, this puts them in a good humor, thus having a tendency to keep down the incentive to violence. Victoria.— It is confirmed that the price of crown lands has been doubled, also that it has been decided to place under reserve from alienation, other than pre-emption, including Cariboo, Lillooet and Kamloop's division of Yale district. Tokio.—Despite formal ratification by the Mikado and Ambassador O'Brien of the recent treaty, Japan is not pleased with the pact. Counts Okuma and Hayashi denounce it as unsatisfactory, claiming that the Japanese were not put on an equal footing with other nationalities. Ottawa.-The Railway commission recommends a fine of two hundred dollars for every day that the Canadian Northern have been operating the branch from Halford to Bullah in Manitoba. The company have not submitted tariff to the Commission and the line has not been inspected or certified as fit for traffic. Victoria.—The payment of $421,552 by the Government to Songhees Indians closes the deal for the reserve. This is equivalent to ten thousand five hundred dollars for each family. The Indians will vacate the reserve in a few weeke. Ottawa.—After two years deliberation the contract for the bridge across the St. Lawrence river at Quebec, Ont., has been awarded to the St. Lawrence Bridge Company. Cost will be $8,650,000. New York. —A very pathetic sight was seen here today when seventy-five thousand workers marched in the funeral procession of the victims of the shirt waist factory. -u— New York—With a full passenger list the steamer "Princess Irene" ran ashore in a fog on Fire Island. High seas are running. It is believed that the vessel will be floated at high tide. Nanaimo. —A powder magazine on Protection Island exploded, followed by another explosion, caused by gasoline taking fire. The shock was felt miles away, and a number of plate glass windows in the city were broken. A man named Jones, watchman, died from injuries received. The explosion caused considerable panic among the miners, who feared a mine disaster. Rev. W. Bromwich held service in the Methodist Church last Sunday. T. C. Clark of the 17-mile ranch made a business trip to town this week. The S. S. Britania made two trips up to the Mission this week to carry men, tools and camping outfit to be used on the Bridge river wagon road. SS. Britania The SS. Britania, plying on Seton lake has once again changed hands, this time the owner being F. Kinder, of Terrace Hall ranch Frederick will be known from now on as "Captain." Appointment Mr. F. C. Gamble who for some years has been in charge as chief engineer of the department of public works has been appointed deputy minister of railways the new department just created by the provincial government. His successor in the public works department is Mr. J. E. Griffiths who has been acting as first assistant to Mr. Gamble. Mrs. F. Kinder and family visited town Thursday and left for Terrace Hall on automobile. J. T. Mellott left Friday morning for Clinton on a combined pleasure and business trip. Mrs. F. J. Cottage Hospital The tender for the construction of the Cottage hospital here has been let to Messrs. Duguid and Page. The construction is to commence as soon as the lumber is ready and the building is to be completed by July 81. Mr. A. F. Noel was elected at the last meeting to be a member of the Directorate of the Hospital Society. Fire Protection The small fire that occurred here this week brings forcibly to mind the necessity of forming a Volunteer Fire Brigade so as to be able to combat with promptness any conflagation which might occur in our midst. Also the necessity of having all ladders and other implements of defense placed in their proper places, which at present they are not. This is the business of all trades people and property owners and the sooner it is seen into the better for us all.
