BIRTH.-To Mr. and Mrs. P.
Dermody, of Lillooet, on Tuesday, January 17, a daughter.
C. Macgee, of Empire Valley,
is in town.
The Clinton Annual Ball takes
place in Clinton, on the 26th and
27th of this month.
H. Keary, rancher, returned
this week from his visit to Ashcroft and Clinton.
A. Noel left for the coast last
Sunday on business in connection with some mining deals.
Three carload of cattle were
frozen to death at North Bend
last week.
J. Bell, Road Supt. returned to
town, from Victoria, last Saturday evening, by way of Lytton.
The Lytton-Lillooet stage arrived in town on runners last
evening, for the first time this
winter.
A meeting of the Over-Seas
Club will be held in the Victoria
Hotel tonight at 7.30. A full
attendance is requested.
A dance and social was held in
the I.O.F. hall last evening, a
pleasant time was spent by all
present.
Messrs. W. Miller and D. Butler who are putting in a wind-
dam on the North fork of Bridge
river, near Burkholder's ranch,
spent a few days in town this
week.
I. Hunt, rancher, arrived in
town last Wednesday en route
from Lytton to his ranch. He
had with him one stallion and
one mare, thoroughbreds, both
from Wales.
K. Birks, traveller, of Victoria,
arrived in town last evening.
P. E. Colebert, of Vancouver;
is spending a few days in town.
Railroad Survey
The Howe Sound and Northern
railway survey party are camped
about a mile and a half out of
town, close to J. Dunlop's store.
All Saved
Keil, Germany.—The submarine boat sunk in the harbor was
raised in three hours. The crew
of 25 were rescued unharmed.
Fire
Moose Jaw, Sask.— The Times
newspaper plant has been destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at fifty thousand dollars.
Elevator Destroyed
Brandon, Man. •- The Maple
Leaf Milling Co's elevator is
burned down. Loss one hundred
thousand dollars.
Premier Resigns
Tokio. — D. Kotskin, wife and
twenty three fellow anarchists,
were sentenced to death for conspiring against the life of the
Emperor and other members of
the Imperial family last September. Later the sentences of
twelve of them were commuted
to life imprisonment. As a result of a storm of protest against
the sentences Premier Katsura
and three members of the cabinet
have resigned.
Bomb Exploded
Victoria.—In the House, Jar-
dine, member for Esqumalt, exploded a bomb when he spoke in
unqualified support of the government's policy and several
times attacking his companion in
arms, Brewster of Albernie. He
said he had assurance that the
Victoria and Barkley Sound Extension of the Canadian Northern Railway would be started
within thirty days and members
of the Lesislature would be invited to see the Premier turn the
first sod. He said that after
voting for the bill last session he
had offered the Liberal Executive of Victoria to resign if his
action was not in the interests of
the country, but none disapproved
The advent of the railway stimulated business in Vancouver Is-
iand.
The Premier introduced a bill
to amend the coal mine act, making numerous changes looking to
the greater safety of miners.
Missing
Sherbrooke, Que. — W. F. Pope,
a prominent merchant of Bromp-
tonville has mysteriously disappeared. He left home in the
evening to drive to Stoke to collect some money but did not
reach his destination. The horse
was found cut and bleeding on
the road. An unsuccessful
search has been made for Mr.
Pope. Indications point to a
terrible fight. Pope had five
hundred dollars when he left
home.
Hold Up
Vancouver.—Richard Grey has
been found guilty of an attempt
to hold up F. R. Cornwall and
sentenced to fifteen years with
twenty lashes. His partner was
sentenced to seven years for having stolen goods in his possession
Canned Eggs
Montreal.—A consignment of
canned eggs from China, valued
at $75,000 has been seized, as
being a danger to public health.

Typhoid in Ottawa
Ottawa. — A serious outbreak
of Typhoid fever is threatened.
There are already 36 cases, and
all are attributed to contaminated
water.
Attempted Murder
Paris.-The Chamber of Deputies was thrown into a panic
yesterday by an attempt on the
life of Premier Briand. Two
shots were fired from the gallery
by a man named Gisolme. One
bullet penetrated the leg of Minister Miereman, who sat beside
the Premier; another penetrated
the woodwork close to the Premier's seat. The Chamber was
quickly closed. The officers had
great difficulty in protecting Gisolme from the mob. The man
was recently liberated from an
asylum where he was placed
following an unsuccessful attempt on the life of the British
Consul at St. Sebastian.
