ei.ergy of the coal, and which to a
large extent, go up the chimney, are
arc utilized as an explosive powder
(od.ivc the piston ot the new cngir.c.
The principal is much the sune as the
explosion in the gasoline engjne, anil
it is set off by an electric spark.
Thc coal is placed in a cjliiulrieii|
luriiace where the coinbiiatioii takes
place. The gasscs pass into another
cylinder, which is called the washer.
U is lilled wilh coke and water and
separates the tar aiul impurities from
ihe gas. 'lhe purified gas pusses into
a receiver wheie it is supplied to an
explosion chamber. Thc return of t!"c
piston rod drives the consumed trasses
lrom the chamber and thc energy,
from the previous explosion drives
the piston back again and the cliaiiiht-r
is filled witlfrie'w gas "by suction.v In
iho first cylinder tliero is a valve
which allows ■ sullicient air to be
drawn in to maintain the combuslinn
but does not allow the escape of gas.
The engine can be adapted to any
amount of horse power wished. One
of the chief advantages is that there is-
no escaping Saiiuke; in fact a chimney
is not required. The engine can be
I'Uii in-si cl sed room. While at present, it is only used as a stationary
engine, in time it is expected that it
will be used as a propelling power.
