"THE MACHINE" DISMISSES GOVERNMENT AGENT WALKER
George J. Walker, Government Agent for
(he Fort George District, has been notified
by Acting Premier Young, tlmt his resignation hits been accepted, which is a diplomatic course pursued by governments when
they wish to remove a civil servant from the
rank- without going to the exertion of kicking him down the granite steps of the
nipitol.
This week under the following plea I l.r)
nunies were signed to u petition requesting
that Mr. Walker lie reinstated:
To the Honorable Richard McBride,
Premier of British Columbia.
Sir: We, the undersigned, residents of the
Fort George District, having learned with
regret that George J. Walker, Government
Agent for this district, has, through some
misunderstanding with the Department,
been asked to resign, and having every
confidence in Mr. Walker, his capability
and efficiency as nn official, would there
fore respectfully request that the Department reconsider their decision, and that he
be reinstated as Government Agent for thc
Fort George District. |
Then followed 113 names, including every
business man in town.-
The information received here regarding
the cause which has led up to the action of
the government with respect to our Government Agent's virtual dismissal, is very
meagre. Mr. Walker left Barkerville some
time ago for Vaneouver where he went to
receive treatment for serious eye trouble.
Our next advicees ure that he is retiring,
under compulsion. — Please, why?
(Jeorge J. Walker has administered the
ninety million acre Cariboo District for the
past six years as Government Agent and
Gold Commissioner at Barkerville. There is
not a man in the district who has known
him, or has had dealings with him in his
official capacity, that will not vouch for his
absolute integrity and honesty of purpose.
He was born in Barkerville, and mined in
the diggings there for years. He probably
knows more about the mining laws and tho
Water Clauses Act than any other Commissioner in the province. His office was admittedly among the most capably administered agencies in British Columbia, and he
has handled, during the past four or five
years the largest volume of land purchase
business for the government that has ever
passed through a distriet commissioner's
oflice.
The action of the people here in asking the
government to reinstate (leorge .1. Walker
here, is intended in no manner to cast any
reflection on Mr. Thos. W. Heme, now acting government agent here. Mr. Heme-has
been gazetted as government ngent for
Fraser Lake, and is acting here during Mr.
Walker's absence. Fraser Lake is to be congratulated upon possessing as its future administrator a man as capable and efficient
as Mr. Heme, and we shall regret to chronicle his departure when that time is upon
us. We want to see Mr. Walker in Fort
(leorge, therefore the tenor of our remarks.
Over in the townsite where George J.
Hammond, the promoter, holds the people
beneath his sway, only one of the inhabitants lifted the pen to add his signature to
the petition for Walker's reinstatement. J.et
us tell you why.. On August the fifth, by a
strange coincidence, just one year ago,
(Jeorge .). Walker arrived here to settle'thc
location of the Government buildings. At
that time these buildings had been commenced upon the townsite of the Natural
Resources Security Company, way up tho
Nechaco Kiver and miles from the business
centre; The man who chose that location
made a blunder, and the howl that went up
caused the government to send Mr. Walker
post haste from the const to settle the
matter. Walker arrived. He stopped the
building of the offices in the Nechaco River
townsite pending his decision, called a
public meeting to decide the matter by vote,
and brought down a decision that the offices should be built on Block 16 of the
South Fort George townsite, which decision
held by Government Auditor Gopel a week
later.
However, the machine got to work, and
the government passed up the opinion of the
people here and located the buildings at a
half way point, on neutral territory, ami
the "interests" rejoiced tin-mat anil will
perhaps fatten the campaign fund therefor.
But these interests never forgave George J,
Walker for doing his duty. They _icked
their money controlled papers on him, and
maligned his character. And now the galaxy
of promoter's utility men over in the Hammond townsite, refuse to sign a petition to
reinstate him in his position.
The Herald, as stated before, knows nothing of the circumstances that have led up to
the present deplorable state of affairs, which
threaten to murk the termination of Mr.
Walker's career as a government official, if
the ministry will not reconsider their decision. The Premier would do well to weigh
the past record of this man against any
matter which does not directly involve the
welfare of the service he has done credit to
so long, so much as a regard for dicipline or
conventionality.
Local and Provincial
The steamer Chilcotin will make an excursion trip to Willow River tomorrow,
nr further up the Fraser River if time will
permit. The big boat leaves the local dock
at l.p.m. Further particulars will be found

A special meeting of the Liberal Association will be held in the McGughran-Thorne
hall on Fourth Street Monday evening at
eight o'clock. All Liberals ure requested to

A. W. Healy, representing the Vancouver
wholesale firm of W. H. Malkin & Co. arrived in town on the steamer "B. X." last
Thursday. Mr. Healy expresses surprise at
the growth of the town since his visit here
hist fall. A. W. Healy is an old timer in this
district. He used to be munager of the Reid
Estate, now James Reid , Ltd., in Quesnel,
and is well hnown in all parts of the district.
Owing to the non-arrival of certain chemicals for the generation of oxygen gas, the
Northern Interior Amusement Company
were unable to put on their show at the
Fort George Theatre on Wednesday evening,
and no show will be held tonight. Tlie next
show will be held on Monday evening.'

■I. 0. Williamson, who has been connected
"'illi thc firm of Close __ Brown for some
lime past, has left the firm to assume
charge of ... (J. Hamilton's store at Stewart Lake, in which he has purchased a half
mtercsl. Mr. Williamson will leave hero
early next week for Fort St. dames, to take
up his new duties. His departure from here
"ill be witnessed with regret.
I his week n man named Neil McDonald,
vim was employed by Surveyor Burden, on
one of his parties near West Luke, cut his
foot with un axe and had to bo carried 5.J
miles to the trail, where Dr. Lazier met him
and drove him into town.
Sandy Hull, a New Yorker, who hus been
investigating the western end of the (i. T.
P. system with a view to investment, came
in over the trail from Hazelton yesterday.
Mr. Hull is staying with Messrs. Close &
Brown, who aro old college friends of his.
The British Columbia Express Company
are making active preperations for the construction of their new steamboat, for service
between Fort George and Tete Juane Cache
next year. She will be ubout the same size
as thc old "Charlotte".
For the first time in its life there wus not
> single lund ad. in the "Cariboo Observer"
published at Quesnel. This is an innovation.
I he Cnriboo Observer wus founded in the
month of August 1908, by J. B. Daniell. We
built it up on land advertisments, but put
most all the mazuma buck into plant. The
passing of the land ad., is a sad event for
'he country editor who likes to cut three
limes a duy, yet the sad day approaches us
likewise, for a wise government has stoppod
ihe sale of land by proxy, and is now picking out the. choice acreage from the surveyed blocks, for sale to the highest bidder,
and is listing the rest with the government
agencies for the pre-emptor. Of this we will
dwell hereafter, so to the land ad. good bye,
to the policy — an revoir.
This is August. It is, or it certainly wus,
Hie intention of the Dominion Government
to attempt the negotiation of a sale of tho
Fort George Indian Reserve this month to
the Grand Trunk Pncitic Railway Co.,
through the medium of their Indian Agents,
lhe Indians nre now willing to sell, nnd it
is to be hoped thnt the agents will not let

DOMINION ELECTION SET FOR THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 21
The gauge lies in the dust. The political
knights are lining up in opposite array on
their tilting ground, and soon there will be
a conflict that will stir Canada upon a
question of reciprocal trade relations with
the United States.
Sir Wilfred Laurier believes that the
people nre with him in his udvocacy of reciprocity. Lined up against him is R. L.
Borden, backed undoubtedly by great cam
paign experience, and Sound arguments
against the Laurier measure. The fight will
probably end in a sweeping victory for the
administration, but The Herald predicts a
decreased representation on the government
side from the eastern provinces.
The date set for the election, according to
telegraphic advices received here, is September 21st. The new parliament will sit on
October the eleventh.
The mails are commencing to grow heavy
with campaign literature, discussing the
can not be considered as a matter which has
reciprocity treaty. It is a deep subject, and
any simple interpretation. Should it go into
force time will show whether or not Canada
or the United States will reap the real benefits of the treaty. Certainly President Taft
hus been outspoken in his belief that Canada
is now leaning townrd the greut nation, of
which he is the chief executive, and his aS1
sertions thut Canada hns now come to the
"Parting of the ways," and that "The bond
uniting the Dominion to the mother country
is light and almost imperceptible," are now
being used by the Conservative party as
strong points showing that the States seek
to take advantage of Sir Wilfred Laurier s
policy of establishing less restricted trade
relations for Canada, even at the cost of
straining the privleges of the Great Britain
preferential tariff.
Arraigned against the Laurier point of
view is the spirit of Imperialism, winch permeates the Empire toduy. 'Tis a great fight.
period. It is hard to surmise the intentions
of the rnilroad company, but we beleivo
that the sale of the Indian Reserve will be
closed very soon. This will raise the mist of
doubt that is obscuring the Fort George
situation now. People will pour in, and will j
invest here with more confidence than at !
present.   At the  present time there is not  ;
much money being invested in property here
except by those who are aware of the situation from long observation, and who are
quietly acquiring town and other property
in anticipation of the stimulus that the sale
of the lndiun reserve will bring in its wake.
Mrs. Guy Lawrence, of Blackwater, rode
in over the trail on Thursday and is visiting
Mr. und Mrs F. P. Burden.
The Firemen's Ball held in the Northern
Lumber Compan's store last night, was a
most successful event, both from a social
standpoint, and as financial assistance to
the fire brigade here. About 150 people attended the dance. The success of the event
was largely due to the untiring efforts of
the committee.
Miss Daphne Dodd arrived on Thursdny's
bout, to visit her parents on Mud River.
FROM ARID ASHCROFT TO SOUTH FORT GEORGE
IRELAND UP A TREE. '
The scene is laid in the upper Fraser
Valley. A dinky little raft swept round the
bend in the river with one Pat Carigan
aboard. From thc way the cognomen is
spelt Sherlock Holmes would apply his deductive theory and tell you that the owner
thereof came from the ..meruit! Isle, probably had red whiskers, and smoked a clay
pipe, most of which would lie correct. Well,
Pat rounded thut bentl nil right und lay a
course near the shore. Without any warning
disaster overtook him, when u submerged
tree connected with the false keel of Pat's
dreadnaught, and to use his own expression,
"Twits all arf wid Oireland". The raft went
on but Pat stayed up the tree. The river
flowed swiftly by. Between the first and
second acts is an interval of 30 hours, according to Pat. This net wus just the tree
sticking up in the wnter with Put in it.
Butt in now the rescuers, John Fountain
and George Williams, wise in river craft, in
their canoe. Rounding the bend after the interval between acts, they were surprised to
note the intrepid voyager who had left the
Cache some time before them, seated in the
fork of a submerged tree, rendering in a
barber-shop-minor that beautiful little ditty
" Ireland Was Ireland When England Was
a Pup." They rescued him.
Over 300 miles from Fort George the Can- i
adian Pacific railway dumps down the intending settler of the north country in the ;
parched little town of Ashcroft. There,
amidst potatoes and heavy freight waggons
with quaint high cahvus tops he will probably bargain with grimy chauffeurs, who
clamour for the privelege of beuring him
north in automobiles of different merits.
Then he will sleep, and tnke breukfast, if [
he came in by the evening train from Van- [
couver, before starting over the 175 miles
of up-and-down hill that separate him
from the steamer landing at Soda Creek.
But all cannot travel by automobiles, for
the charge is S_!8 to Soda Creek, und §35 to j
the town of Quesnel, should connection not
be mnde at the former place with the B. C.
Express Company's bout thut runs from
there. The others walk, or, if they ure renl
hoJne-seekers with u little money, drive
their teams north, pasturing their beasts by
the wayside as much as possible to avoid
the buying of the very expensive feed. Many
such outfits are passed on the roud, the hus-
bnnd wulking, und the wife driving, with
tlie family parrot swinging from the seat.
Behind, in the waggon, is every kind of
impedimenta from the baby downwards,
and the old cow follows patiently behind.
But, however the journey is made, it is
full of interest. The traveller unused to a
dry belt feels an emptiness of soul, as he
rises over the sage brush hills that encircle
Ashcroft, looking like vast dumps of worthless soil, and is umuzed to be told, that
they need the touch of irrigntion to be covered with the verdure thnt at present hugs
the water courses, running far below. Then
at the turn of the rond a jangling of bells
is heard, and there stands one of the freight
outfits, six or seven teams of horses hitched
to two or three waggons roped together, so
that one man may look after after a treble
charge. He either seats himself postilion
like on one of the wheelers, or makes use of
a plough sent stuck on the side of the foremost wnggon.
The rondhouses along the way are solid
legacies of the old goldrush days, when the
miners of '58 went north to the famous
Cariboo diggings nt Barkerville and William's Creek. And now prosperous
fnrmers inhabit them, for once over the divide and away from the dry, arid, pine-
covered hill tops the traveller descends into
a fine stock raising country, of open parklike spuces, nnd lightly wooded slopes. It
will be somewhere in this country that the
first night will probably be spent, and the
good 50-cent beds and meals will refresh the
weary traveller and reconcile the city man
to the loss of all he has left behind him.
But we can not linger on the trail, and
the auto rounds a sharp bend to open up
the Fraser flowing fur below in a valley
from which the dark-timbered bench lands
rise 500 feet on either side. Below the landing the swirling river plunges into the Soda
Creek canyon, which prevents any further
navigation to the south. From this point I
up to Quesnel the country is very sparcely
settled, but here and there a fine ranch
meets the eye, where crops of oats nnd hay
are raised. Then Quesnel comes into sight,
and the jealous little town,, that has lived
for fifty years on the trade of the Barkerville mines, is full of "knockers", that will
speak no good word for Fort George and
the north. Many a foolish settler, that has
started without counting the cost, has been
turned buck from this point. Lured by advertisements, rosily worded and too full of
rash promises, they lenve their jobs to exhaust their few savings on the trail. Work
is not so easy to find as they expected, and
along the route all kinds of bad reports are.
heard. If they get pust Quesnel and decide
to walk the rest of the way, the? will tin-

RAILROAD ACTIVITY AT THE CACHE RECOMING MARKED
THE WAR SCARE.
The war scare has'nt phased South Fort
George nt all so fnr. A committee of protection, which met this week in Pat. Campbell's cigar store to discuss tho possibility of
invasion, promulgated plans for the resist-
nncy of the enemy which redound to the
credit of our embryo war dogs. It was generally conceded that South Port George has
withstood the attacks of foreing enemies
without any great loss in the past, and a
unanimous vote of confidence wus passed by
the defence committee in themselves. It was
the opinion of the Admiral of the Navy that
Jack Fountain and (leorge Williams, two
old timers in these forests, cume down from
Tete Juane Cache on Thursday Inst. Mr.
Fountain informs us thnt railroad activity
at the Cache is now becoming marked. A
large construction cntnp is being built there
ready for immediate occupancy. The tote
rond is being pushed down tho river to j
Dome Creek, u point where the townsite, in !
which Mr. Fountain is interested, will be put I
on the market nt some future date. Dome
Creek is about fifty miles south of Tete
Juane Cache on the Fraser river, and about
150 milcs from here. ,
There nre nbout fifteen hundred men working on construction on the British Columbian side of the provincial boundary in the
Yellowhead puss. The lubor is principally
Belgian. I'p to the time of their departure
Messrs. Fountain and Williams had not seen
Government Agent Kirkup, who is now on
his way into Tete Juane Cache to administer thc district convergent to that point.
Mr. Kirkup left Vancouver some weeks ago
bound for the Cache via Edmonton.
There are hundreds of stakes along thc
Fraser valley between the Cache und the
North Fork of the Fraser river, Mr. Fountain tells us, in spite of the fact that the
whole area for n distance of three .miles on
either side of the Fraser is under absolute
reserve. The squatters seem to think that
the Lands Department in Victoria will recognise their rights. In many instances the
men who have located in the reserve nre
actually improving their expropriations to
n considerable extent. Just what the outcome of this will lie. we can not imagine .It
is hardly conceivable, that, after placing a
reserve upon un area of country that the
government will allow it to be usurped by
a cordon of squatters, yet the letters from
the Lands Department, to enquirers, on
this subject, have been very ambiguous, and
the men on the land must believe thut they
hnve some right to the consideration of the
government, or surely they would not be
there, lt would seem thnt the government
nre countenancing a procedure which will
either end in a terrific uproar being raised
by the squatters when they find their ho|nes
snatched from beneath them if the policy of
surveying the reserve and allowing it to be
alienated by pre-emptors from blue prints
in the government agent's office, is carried
out; or in n fiasco if the government nllow
the squutters uny concessions, us their
rights ure absolutely nil according to tho
statutes of British Columbia. Why should
this be? The reserve, in its remote situation,
would be well settled by pre-emptors nt
this tunc. None but the bons fide settler
could fulfil the requirements of the Land
Act there under present conditions. That the
land is sought after widely is evinced by the
fact of the squatters being there. Under these
circumstances it would seem advisable for
the administration to tuko some steps tn
either warn those who are settling on this
unqualified reserve that they nre wasting
their time, and cannot assuredly obtain u
crown grant unless preference is made them
at the time when the policy for the alienation of the lands covered by the reserve is
fixed, or ns a sensible alternative, throw
open the three mile belt to pre-emptors, and
grant records to the men on the ground
who have done improvement work.
There is a great amount of interest shown
in the reserved area by would-be settlers,
for the belt is fertile and well, although remotely situated at present. The lower end of
the reserve is 08 miles north of here, whilst
it extends clear to the provincial boundary
from that point in a six mile strip. There is
no route of transportation into it save by
canoe from here, or by the Edmonton route
through the Yellowhead pass to reach its
eastern section. Men who want this land
bud enough to "squat" on it, nre entitled
to the ultimatum of the government us to
whether they will ever own the land they
nre working on or not.
tho attack would be made by water, nml :
after some discussion it was decided to pre- '•
pure for the German attack along the water
route from the south. The Fort (leorge
canyon wus chosen us the best point lor
defence nnd it was decided lo sacrifice the
greut steamer Chilcotin by sinking her in
the channel us an effective means of block-
ing uny nearer approach In the beseiged
city by the enemy. The Nechaco River wild- |
cats will be let loose in the woods und will
terrorise uny lnnd armies by their awful and
repellant appearance. The steamer "Fort
Fraser" will be transformed into a submarine to protect the harbour, and tho
dreadnought "B. X." after having completed the work of being protected by a covering of Armour's evaporated egg cans, will
cruise the southern reaches in search of the
enemy':: fleet. The steamer Quesnel will net
as a stores transport and floating arsenal,
carrying the supply of Dutch cheese to bo
used in lieu of shell in the 36-inch guns.
Oh! we don't worry, no siree.
This is a peach of a state of affairs. Hern
is the British Empire with n war cloud
gathered overhead, and half thc Canadian
navy out of commission on the southern
point of Nova Scotia chock full of holes iu
her nrmor plates. Poor old Miobe. 1 IH- BCIIAL-I

THE NORTHERN INTERIOR BREWING CO., LTD.

This company is proposing to immediately
ereot at Quesnel, n high class, modern brewery, nnd is offering to the public for subscription at par 300 of its GOO shares.
Since the incorporation of the company
several jnonths ago, continuous efforts have
been made to obtain from the Dominion
Inland Revenue Departmant its consent to
the issue of u brewery licence. It has now
agreed to a grant being made when the
brewery is erected, and it has already appointed an Inland Revenue Inspector at
Quesnel to transact the business of the company. An application will be made with all
practicable speed for a provincial licence,
and the Directors now propose to immediately construct and equip the brewery.
The whole expenses of promoting the
company, including Solicitors charges for
promotion; Government fees; stock books;
tho printing of stock certificates and the
Articles of Association; Solicitor's charges
for securing nn understanding from the
Dominion Government as to n grant of a
licence when brewety is erected; the cost of
printing nnd publishing this prospectus have
Been assumed by the Directors, or some of
them, and for so doing the snid J. B. Dun-
iell will be allotted 60 shares, nnd the said
J. A. Eraser; W. L. Collins; 'A. W. Cameron;
E. L. Kepner; and George J. Walker 18
shares each. A contract dated 25 November
J9I0 to this effect hns been entered into between the Compuny und the individual Directors and the same may be seen at the registered oflice of the Company during business hours.
The Company is thus, without the payment of a single dollur, in the very fortunate position of being discharged from all initial nnd organizing expenses.
No shares will be,issued at a discount nnd
every dollar subscribed will be used for the
actual business ,needs of the company.
The Directors are fortunate in having secured the services of Mr. George Bruder as
Brewer and Manager. Mr. Bruder is splendidly equipped for the position. He has 25
years experience ns n Brewer in Germany,
Switzerland, the United States and Canada.
He is a graduate of the Ame. i.an Brewing
Academy and was for years Brewmaster of
the Upper Michigan Brewing Company, and
later of the Imperial Brewing Company, of
Kamloops, both of which were exceedingly
successful uader his management.
Mr. Bruder is the owner of a considerable
amount of Brewing plant and apparatus,
and so much confidence has he in the possibilities of this District, and the successful
outlook of the Company that he has agreed
to turn over his plant at a valuation in exchange for the shares of the Company at
full par value.
The Directors only propose to raise the
capital necessary to place the Company in a
thoroughly sound financial condition, and
now offer for sale 815,000,00 of shares based
on the following estimate:
Site 8500.00
Building 7000.00
Machinery etc 4000.00
Plnnt and Apparutus ......1500.00
Tools and accessories 500.00
Working Capital 2500.00
Less estimated value of
Mr. Bruder's plant
Net amount of capital

816,000.00
1250.00
..811750.00
The profits of Breweries are proverbial.
Tho distances of this country from the rnil-
rond; the impossibility of price competition
from the nearest brewery; the immense extent of territory this brewery will serve; and
the splendid prices obtainable, place this
brewery in a class by itself, and make the
Directors firm in their belief Unit this coin-
pnny will in a very short tiine be in an exceedingly prosperous condition and paying a
very high rate of dividend.
This brewery will supply Quesnel, Fort
George, Stanley, 150 Mile House, Soda
Creek, Quesnel Forks, Hydraulic, and all the
surrounding country, and it is estimated
that these places, during this year, consume
at least 2000 barrels of beer. The plant it is
proposed to install is capable of manufact-
facturing 2500 barrels of beer per annum,
leaving a considerable margin for development without increased cost.
The construction of the G. T. P. and other
railways through this part of Northern B.
C. will immediately increase the territory
this brewery will serve, and ensure a big expansion of business within,a comparatively
short time. As any larger quantity of beet
can be manufactured at a less cost of output than a smaller quantity, a steady increase in'the yearly profit in proportion to
the increase in business will be made.
' An average wholesale price of a barrell of
beer holding 6 doz. bottles is 810.00 at the
Brewery. Prices vary from 88.10 to 812.85
The average weight of such a barrell is
2451bs, and the freight from the Brewery to
Quesnel at 5 cents per pound would be 812.-
25. Beer from the Railway cannot therefore
be laid down in Quesnel under 822.25 per
barrell.
Thc estimated sost ol manufacturing a 6
dozen barrell of finest quality beer in Quesnel i.« only 87.80.
At 822.2,'j per barrell a bottle of beer costs
approximately 31 cents, of which the freight
is approximately 17 cents.

After providing for the writing off of the
cost of the entire building and plant in five
years, and for the creation in that time of
a reserve fund equal in amount to the entire capital now to b« subscribed, these
profits would pay a dividend of over 60 per
cent.
To comply with the Companies Act it is
stated that the Minimum Subscription on
which the Directors will proceed to allotment is one share. A considerable number of
shares have already been spoken for.
Applications for shares should be made
upon the form accompanying this prospectus, and sent to the Company's Bankers, the
Northern Crown Bank, Quesnel, or to the
Trader's Bank, South Fort George, with a
remittance for the amount payable on application.

Association is printed in the fold hereof,
and with the Articles of Association of the
Company forms pan hereof.
Where no allotment is made the deposit
will be returned in full, and also where the
number of shares allotted is less thnn the
number applied for the balance of the deposit will be applied towards the remaining
payments.
Failure to pay any future instalment on
shares allotted when due will render previous payment liable to forfeiture.
