I), Are conditions favorable for _rpentcr-contractur in the spring? I). Is there an opening for an el or good lodging house? j). Have you a sawmill, and can Ibcr be obtained? About when does navigation (5). What is the fare from Ashcroft to Fort George? (6). If some of our party bought land would there be much sale for farm products at present? (7). Do you think the early spring an opportune time to buy real estate in your town? L.V.M. In the first place the Grand Trunk Pacific railway, at this writing, have not acquired thc Indian reservation, and, furthermore, there is no such town, city or village by the name Fort George, controlled by a railway. What property is being sold today in the district is firstly and all the time, addition property. Addition property, like every other commodity, has a value by its proximity to the point to be selected by tbe railway company. Home of it is good, some bad, and some being sold today in coast cities is not worth a pinch of snuff. Every newcomer tbe past season has located in what is known as Soutli Fort George and a large number, too, who had previously acquired property in other additions. The reason for this is too palpably plain to tbe man on the ground. He buys where there is an ultimate prospect of advance and profit. No man has bought real estate in South Fort George because of love or bond of sympathy for the Northern Development Co. The same opportunity was afforded to buy elsewhere. No man in his right senses and on the ground would think of paying one thousand dollars for a lot if he did not believe the strategical position of the point in which he invested would develop Into profitable return. The Northern Development Co. have not advertised South Fort George to any degree. It does not need outside advertising. All that is necessary is to have the prospective inves.or cover the ground and the rei.t is plain. Tbe Northern Development Co. have not performed any development work on the townsite worth speaking about. This has been accomplished by those who have had the good fortune to buy lots early. It is individual effort that is making South Fort George; not the work of a corporation. What commands and arrests the attention of a new-comer is the position South Fort George commands by being on the Fraser river. With the exception of the Hudson's Bay Co.'s strip, which is a trifle over one-third of a mile, facing the same river, and separating South Fort George from the reservation; the southern portion of the Collins addition and Fort George Centre, all other additions are back from the river in varying distances of from two to four miles. John Houston picked out South Fort George. He could have purchased elsewhere as cheaply. The B. N. A. bank inspector selected South Fort George and located the company's bank on the shores of the Fraser. Tbe Traders Bank cancelled their pre-arranged plans on arrival here and located in South Fort George. Why, because they saw value on the big waterway. Thc Hudson's Bay Co. were never restricted in the selection of their post. The main stoic and office are 75 feet from tbe Fraser's edge. This selection was made many years ago. These are thc arguments we advance in regard to South Fort George, and which appeal to every mortal who has visited the district. We do not claim that South Fort George is the railway town selected by the G. T. P. But this we do believe, that by its proximity to tbe reservation and its ideal location on the Fraser river, it will be an important section of the Grand Trunk townsite once the railway company locate their terminals on the Indian lands. (1). Yes. Carpenters' wages last summer were $7 per day. (2). We have the best and only hotel in the district; there is room for morc; there is room for a lodging- house. (3). Two sawmills are located here. The demand for lumber exceeded the supply last season. Greater output will be ensured this spring by added equipment to the mills. (5). Seventy-five dollars. Vehicles are stage or auto and steamboats. Distance 300 miles. (6). There is sale for anything and everything that can be grown. Hay is selling today for {100 a ton; oats 10c lb.; meadow hay iu October sold for $60 per ton. These are winter figures and it is impossible to arrive at anything like a fair medium. (7.) Real estate is a bard matter to advise on. We would not advise you to buy on paper. Come and see it. If it is worth anything, it is worth seeing. forth Coast Agent on the Future of the District he greatest event of this year to Pacific enast was the completion he Western Pacific to San Fran- saiil J. P. Spaulding, man- t of llie North Coast Land Corner, uiili offices in the Mills build- I Sun Francisco, in an interview Itl). S. F. Call, "and I venture prediction that the greatest Int. of the coming year will be the felling of the Grand Trunk Pacific tough to the northwest coast. "Until this year very few people knew of Central British Columbia. Even persons long resident in the province spoke of everything north ol Ashcroft or Kamloops as 'nothern British Columbia.' "This mistake was quite a natural one. Thc whole development of British Columbia has been along its southern fringe. Vancouver, its largest town, is located at tbe extreme southwest corner of the province. "North of the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad tbe difficulty of travel was very great. It is only within the last live years — since the opening up of the Crow's Nest line — tbat the development of the enourmoii-ly rich country between the main line of the Canadian Pacific and the international boundary became possible. "Within thc last four years, however, all this has changed. When it was decided by the Canadian government that another transcontinental railroad should be built across Canada the surveyors located its route through the Yellowhead pass — the lowest and least difficult of all the roads through the Rockies. From the Yellowhead Pass to Prince Rupert this survey follows tbe valley of the upper Fraser to its junction with the Nechaco, and thence up that stream and the Bulkley, to the Skeena and down its valley to the Pacilic. "The management of the Grand Trunk Pacific railway states officially that it is probable that no other area in North America can equal this portion of British Columbia in richness or variety of her natural resources. "Tbe principal interior city of that region will doubtless be Fort George "Population is pouring into tbat country at an unprecedented rate. Thousands are only waiting for the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific to get into the country to develop its forests, its fields, its mines and its manufactures. When that wave of settlement gets into the the country, Fort George will be one of tbe largest cities of Canada and the second city in British Columbia'. "That is a country that it is well worth the while of San Francisco business men to look over and to lay plans to control tbe trade of in as many lines as possible." Preparing for the Rush Into the Peace Eiver The Optimistic Westerner The Dominion government is mak- preparations to do its share in billing thc rush of settlers which I is expected will start for the great ce river country this spring. J. Cornwall, M. L. A., for Peace |ver, Alberta, has recently return- from Ottawa, where he has been connection with this work. He |ys that tbe government seems to well informed as to the needs of kat district and is preparing to ac- bnimodate the settlers. One matter taken up was tbe conservation of the timber resources of the north country. Mr. Cornwall pointed out that the rush of settlers carried with it many dangers in this regard. Carelessness in the building of fires had already resulted in the destruction of many hundreds of acres of valuable forestB. The government has now made an appropriation for more adequate fire guards. All of the main trails will be patrolled this summer and the incoming settlers will be carefully watched. Better postal facilities was another matter taken up and this will be attended to at once. Last year a monthly service was given to Grande Prairie and most of tbe intervening points. This will be much improved. In thc government telegraphs tbe line was carried to Peace River Crossing. This year another line will be carried from Athabasca Landing to Fort McMurray, and the contract for the poles and delivery of supplies it is expected will be let at once. William White, second vice-president of the C. P. R., in an interview at Toronto, January 21, is quoted as saying that "immigration in the west is our greatest asset. The American farmer, with full understanding and experience of the problems he has to face, is an ideal settler, and he is the man we particularly want. It is absurd to say tbat there is any menace in that quarter, for practically all of them become splendid Canadians. "The pessimistic views of our crop future shoot very far beyond the mark. There must also be fluctuations in the tide of the farmer'! prosperity, and the prices of grain are no criterion of conditions. There is always an optimistic feeling in the west, which I consider in tbe light of experience to be perfectly justified." .anscontinental Grades Compared What the Hammond Organ Dishes Up to the Public ■Of all the transcontinental roads Inning to the Pacific coast, the new Ie of the Grand Trunk Pacific will kve the easiest grades of any of ■cso nient systems, both American Jil Canadian, and will have a com- pittvely level stretch of country the rest of thc way. |i the comparison of the Grand "k Pacific, the Canadian Pacific, on Pacific, on the Omaha to San nclsco route, on tbe Omaha to Jtluiul route, the Western Pacific the Santa Fc system, the new |e luis but 0,990 feet ascent to overcome on the eastbound route, and 6,890 feet westward. "The recent gold discovery made by Messrs. Clarke, Kindred and Whitmeyer on the southwestern boundary of the town has caused keen interest in Fort George. A large body of ore has evidently been uncovered showing it to be rich in copper and gold. A five-foot drift has been opened, and as the drills advance the ore appears richer. The ledge apparently extends for a good distance. As a matter of fact there is not a spec of mineral within one hundred miles of the spot. We do not decry this simply because it emanates with the Natural Resources. A beginning is being made with the making of waistcoats. Thc discovery of this new process is largely due to the fact tbat bleached cotton is known to be composed of nearly pure cellulose. Working on this basis scientists have discovered a method of manufacturing a thread of celluloso extracted from spruce wood. The. finished product will, it is said, he cheaper than cotton in the hale. ox valley. For years they have struggled along paying toll to the Indians every time they crossed tbe Skeena, except for a few weeks In the winter when the river was frozen over. This condition has held back the improvement of Kispiox valley farms, as hay was the only crop that could be sure of reaching a market. However, a new era has dawned for the forty or more settlers in the valley and Kispiox farms will now mean something more than a name. HOTEL ADDITION. Turning to the criticism of the land policy, Premier McBride, in the legislature now in session, pointed out that the rural population of tho province had doubled within the past five years. That land was not held for speculators was shown by the fact that of twenty-eight million acres of land available for agriculture in the province, twenty-three millions had been reserved for pre- emptors. ELEVEN MILLION FOR LAND. The Hudson's Bay Company has disposed of 500,000 acres of land in Western Canada to a largo land company, and two hundred thousand acres to the Canadian Pacific Railway Co., in all amounting to a sum of a round million dollars. This is a result of the new policy of the reorganization committee of the Hudson's Bay Co., recently initiated, whereby the old company will dispose of most of their land holdings In the west and also in British Columbia: DEATH OF THE FIRST WHITE WOMAN ON THE SKEENA. An old resident of the Hazelton district, in the person of Mrs. R. E. Loring, wife of the Indian agent at that point, passed away on the 20th December. Mrs. Loring was the first white woman to go up the Skeena river. In the course of a long life spent for the greater part in that vicinity, she not only raised a large family to useful manhood and womanhood, but left in many ways the imprint of an unusual strong character on both the white and native population. She was devoted to the upraising of the natives. As wife of the Indian agent she came into close touch with them and mucn of her time and attention was spent in their behalf. Great credit is due to her efforts, as in a great measure tbe natives of the district are largely in her debt for the Btate of civilization to which titey have attained. SCOTCH MARRIAGE LAWS. Scotland has long been noted for its easy marriage laws, of which the lovesick lads and lassies of the mora punctilious south have taken thc advantage for generations. In Scotland there are two classes of valid marriage, "regular" end "irregular," and even in the case of the former, there are important differences from English procedure. In England a minor cannot legally marry without the consent of his or her parents or other guardians, but in Scotland a minor need nsk nobody's leave before "commitUag matrimony," provided that, if a inuu he has reached tbe age of 14, if a woman she is a veritable Venus at 12. Interest, however, centers chiefly around Scotch "regular" marriages, of which there are three kinds recognized by law. In the first class is "marriage by declaration or acknowledgement." Here the contracting parties simply declare, either verbally or in writing, before two witnesses, that they take each other for husband and wife, or that they have already done so. A good deal of nonsense has been written about these marriages by declaration. Many a romance has been made to hinge on such a plot as a couple playing in amateur theatricals going through a mock irregular marriage, only to find themselves tied up hard and fast for life. This is mere moonshine for the validity of a marriage by declaration depends on the intention and free consent of the parties to be married. As the declaration may be made verbally, and the marriage need not be registered, it is clear that if thc witnesses die there may be difficulty in establishing the marriage. It would seem that if a villain marries a girl by declaration and grows tired of her he has only to get rid of the witnesses somehow or other, to be in a position to repudiate his wife; but here the law is against him. This brings us to the second class of "irregular marriage," namely, "marriage by repute or habit." If a couple have lived together as married, have addressed each other as husband and wife, and permitted others so to address them, the Scotch law holds them married, although proof of marriage may be wanting.
