the young man does not seem
lhave taken kindly to thc drudg-
incident to the daily life of a fur
Ider. Adventure and the search
|r glory were rai/i more cong.-
to his tastes. These he success-
(ollowed in his first expedition
in the noble stream which now
bears his name. That journey was
effected during the summer of 1789,
and it only served to whet his appetite for excitement and fame. It
was also a welcome preparation for
the more difficult task which remained in store for him.
There had been some contention as
to the probable distance from Lake
Athabaska to thc Pacific ocean,
which the expeditions of adventurers
belonging to various nationalities
had made fairly known. There, according to native reports, "white
men were to he seen who wore armor," whereby were meant either the
Spaniards or English, or even the
aborigines of the coast, who were
often taken for v/hites by the . natives of the interior, and amongst
whom the use of armor was quite
common. An expert had finally decided that the distance to the Pacilic must be very great. But this
only urged Mackenzie to reach it by
land.
During his expedition to thc Arctic
ocean he had more than once deplored his want of astronomical knowledge and the lack of the proper instruments. To obtain this desideratum, he crossed over to London in
1791, there acquired the necessary information and returned in the spring
of 1792, when he sent ahead of his
expedition two men to prepare timber for houses and palisades wherein
to winter, so as to be able to make
an early start in 1793.
Mackenzie was the discoverer of
New Caledonia and, therefore, of
the interior of British Columbia.
Nay, as the skippers who visited the
North Pacific coast never ventured
inland, be might with reason be put
down as the discoverer of the whole
country. On that account, the
smallest details entered in his journal, the aspect of the country, and
the nature of its fauna, such nu they
appeared to him, but more especially his account of his first encounters
with the natives are invested with
an importance which could hardly be
exaggerated. Having left Fort Ohip-
pewayan on the 10th of October, 1792
be arrived ten days later at the last
post established on the Peace river,
-"amidst thc rejoicing and firing of
the people, who were animated with
l..j pi usp.ei, of again indulging
themselves in the luxury of rum."
The first pages of Mackenzie's journal are valuable as giving an insight
into the policy followed by the N.W.
company with regard to their subordinates:
"As they (the Indians, who must
have been Beavers) very soon expressed their desire of the expected regale, I called them together, to the
number of 42 hunters or men capable
of bearing arms, to offer some advice » » * and I strengthened my
admonition with a nine gallon cask
of reduced rum and a quantity of
tobacco."
Leaving the new establishment, he
crossed the Rocky Mountains up to
the junction of the Parsnip and the
Finlay, and, a short distance west
thereof, he met, on the former, the
men he had sent to prepare his winter quarters.
His tent had no sooner being
pitched than he summoned them together, reproached them with their
past misbehaviour, after which ha
gave each of them "about 4 inches
of Brazil tobacco," and "presented
them with a quantity of rum," ladd-
ing thc somewhat naive recommendation that they should use it with
discretion. He theu set his men to
build five more houses for themselves, and thenceforth his life was
that of a fur-dealer, occasionally visited by the trappers, and subsisting
on the game of the country, which,
happily, was very abundant.
On the 1st of January, 1793, he
was, as usual, awakened by volleys
from his men's muskets, and, in return for their good wishes, he treated them "with plenty of spirits."
Five days afterwards he mentions
the firing of the Indian guns as a
mark of sorrow at the death of a
member of the tribe, a circumstance
which goes to prove that fire-arms
were already common in that part of
the world. Intoxicants do not seem
to have been much scarcer, since he
adds in a foot-note, that when those
Indians are drinking, they frequently
present their guns to each other,
when any of the parties have not
other means of procuring rum."
In April tbe supply of liquor was
exhausted among the natives, who
sent an embassy to him to "demand
rum to drink." Having at first refused to comply with their request,
their threats forced him to yield to
their importunities.
At the opening of the spring he received a valued reinforcement in the
person of Alexander Mackay, and
finally, on the 9th of May, 1793,
Mackenzie left for hie perilous expedition in a birch'bark canoe 25 feet
long, 4 f feet beam, and 26 inches
hold. Therein he found place for _,-
000 pounds of baggage and provi
sions, together with a crew of nine
French Canadians. Besides Mackay
and his chief, there were Joseph
Landry, Charles Ducette, Baptiste
Bisson, Francois Courtois, Jacques
Beauchamp, and Francis Beaulieu.
These were accompanied by two Indians, who were to act as hunters
and interpreters.
Ascending the Parsnip, the explorer met with several elk and herds of
buffalo, two noble animals which
have Bince disappeared forever from
those quarters. Then beaver succeeds to the larger game, and Mackenzie declares that in no part of
the world did he see so much beaver
work.
On the Oth of June he meets with
tho first party of undoubted Sekanais, a body of natives who had
heard of white men, but had never
seen any. They immediately took to
flight, and on sending his men to
parley with them, the latter were received with the brandishing of spears
the display of bows and arrows, and
loud vociferations. Having succeeded
in dispelling their fears, the explorer soon noticed Iron work in their
possession. On inquiry he found that
they got it from people who lived
up a large river (the Carriers), who
in turn procured it from others who
dwelt in houses (the Coast Indians),
to whom it was furnished by men
like Mackenzie himself, who travelled
in canoes large as islands on the
"stinking lake," the sea. They professed to know of no stream that
emptied therein, but mentioned a
large river whose "inhabitarts built
houses, lived on islands, an'1 were a
numerous and warlike people." This
is the first implied reference we find
in the whole field of literature to the
Fraser and the Carrier Indians.
Having persuaded one of the Sekanais to accompany them in the
capacity of guide, Mackenzie and
party reached (June 12th) a lake 2
miles long, which was no other than
the source of the Parsnip. After a
portage of only 817 paces, they came
to another lake, whence they entered
a small stream which was to try
sorely their patience, and which, for
that reason, they called the " Bad
River." The party was wrec'-ed on
this river, but the cargo afterwards
recovered.
As a climax, the guide deserted on
the 15th, and they were left alone
to contemplate the "Great River,"
which they reached in the course of
the same day, and which Mackenzie
took to be the Columbia. This, as
everybody knows, was nothing else
than the large stream which nowadays goes by the name of Fraser
River.
On the 19th of June bis men saw,
without being able to entertain
them, a small party of Carriers, who
fled at their approach. On the morrow he passed a house which seemed
to him so novel that he describes it
minutely, along with "a large machine of a cylindrical form," which
was none other than a salmon basket. On June 21st, somewhere between what is now Quesnel and
Alexandria, he came upon the first
party of Carriers with whom he
could hold intercourse.
Mackenzie's new friends described
their immediate neighbors, the Shushwaps, as "a very malignant race,
who lived in large subterranean recesses," and they did their best to
dissuade him from continuing farther, if he valued his life at all.
A map of the southern course of
the river was drawn for his benefit,
to show him the madness of his enterprise, while he was told that, after only seven days' march due west,
he could obtain his object by following a route to the "stinking lake,"
where the Indians themselves used
to procure brass, copper and trinkets. From that quarter they also
got iron bars eighteen inches long,
which they fashioned into axes and
arrow and spear points.
As he had not more than 30 days'
provisions left, he held a consultation with his men, the result of
which was that they would return up
the river to the stream (Blackwater)
whose valley they would follow by
land to reach the coast.
On Tuesday, July 2, 1793, the
whole party reached the mouth of
the Blackwater, where Mackenzie harangued his men, declaring his firm
and irrevocable resolution to go west
even though he might be left alone.
He made a cache, left bis canoe on a
scaffolding, and handing each of his
white companions a pack of some 90
pounds, with a gun and ammunition
he directed his steps in their company towards the village of the Nas-
khu'tins, which was then eleven
miles distant from the mouth of the
Blackwater river, on a lake called
Poencho.
After crossing two mountains the
whole party came upon an arm of
the sea, now Bentinck Inlet, among
troublesome Indians, where the indefatigable explorer wrote on a rock,
"Alexander Mackenzie, from Canada,, by land, the twenty-second of
July, one thousand seven hundred
and ninety-three." i
In another month, Aug. 24, the intrepid voyagers, were safely back at
Fort Chippewayan.

After consultation with those in
charge of the park the minister
decided that, in the section where
the beavers were most troublesome,
five hundred per year might be killed
without reducing the number below
thc safety limit. About two hundred were trapped last season after
the order went into effect, and the
Bkins were sold by public tender.
Beaver skins are reported worth
from $8 to $12 each, according to
quality.
About a year ago Thomas South-
worth, during his term as president
of the Canadian Forestry association
publicly advocated making Algonquin
park a "fur farm," and he estimated
that without injury to the park as a
game refuge furs to the value of
$40,000 per year might lie taken,
which would go to defray the upkeep
of the park. A good many people
(who, unlike Mr. Southworth, had
not had ten years' experience in forestry) thought his ideas were impracticable, but events proved that
the officers 'of the Provincial Crown
lands department were thinking in
the same direction, and the order of
Mr. Cochrane and sale of furs shows
that they have put the matter to

the importance of the point. To dispose of lots before the road is in a
position to haul supplies would
mean the erection of a large number
of structures of a non-permanent nature, owing primarily to the high
cost of transportation from the
const.

The Northern Lumber Co. have
completed plans for a store block
which they are about to erect at the
corner of Second and Thapage avenues, the former site on which the
Traders Bank located. The store
dimensions arc 30 by 60, and will be
two storeys. A warehouse, 30 by 42,
will also be erected at the rear, and
once the structures are completed
will be second to none north of Vancouver, is the statement made by W.
F. Cooke, member of the firm, who
left for the coast Thursday, to purchase supplies and make arrangements to bring in freight as early
as transportation facilities will permit. The mercantile end will be run

OMINECA MINING STATISTICS.
As indicated by the statistics of
the mining recorder's office at Hazelton, Omineca mining district is
rapidly assuming importance. The
figures for 1910 indicate greater
growth than was shown by any district in the province in the previous
year, thc last for which figures are
available. In the number of claims
recorded, this district In 1910 surpassed the record of all others for
1909, while in the number of free
miners' certificates Issued it was second only to New Westminster district, which includes the city of Vancouver. For purposes of comparison
says the Omineca Herald, the office
statistics for the last two years are
given below:
1909
Mineral claims recorded 260
Placer claims recorded 197
Certificates of work 288

In a few weeks the geographers of
thc Dominion will have to add to
their list over a dozen new names,
the appellations selected by tbe heads
of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railroad
for the new stations along the line
of the first one hundred mjles of
roadbed eastward out of Prince Rupert.
A. E. McMaster, agent at Prince
Rupert for the company, while in
Winnipeg, obtained from the head office the names selected for the stations between Prince Rupert and
Copper River, a list of which appears below, with mileage eastward
from Prince Rupert as zero. The distance from the western terminus and
the names are as follows:
Stations on G. T. P. East From
Prince Rupert.
0.00 Prince Rupert
16.61 Sockeye
21.28 Tyee
26,49 Essington

75.31 Sbamos
82.30 Lakelse
88.36 Kitsum
94.32 Eddy
100.29 Copper River
It will be noted that almost all
the names are short. This is explained as the work of the telegraph
operators. Mr. Chamberlain and Mr.
Hinton make a practice of submitting all new names to the telegraph
staff, and they in turn eliminate such
appellations as do not lend themselves to distinct transmission over
the telegraph wire. This accounts
for the brevity of most of the station names given. Indian names
have been preserved in the main.
Supt. Phelan of the Yukon telegraph wire, and Contractor Salous
of the Grand Trunk system, have
both been remembered, and their
names perpetuated in the list given
above. Names like Kitsumkallum
have, under the censorship, become
Kitsam. The new names will in all
probability lie promulgated in a Q.
T. P. official order in the near future.

HOUSTON MEMORIAL WILL BE
FOUNTAIN OR LIBRARY.
That the John Houston memorial
shall take the form of a drinking
fountain, or, if sufficient money is
subscribed, a public library building,
was the decision arrived at after
much discussion at a meeting of subscribers held in Nelson on the 24th
ultimo. The meeting was called for
the purpose of electing officers and
formulating plans for carrying on
tho work in a more organized form
than has, up to the present, been the
case.
The scheme to raise funds to erect
some permanent memorial to the
memory of the late John Houston
had its birth in a conversation between some admirers of the grand
old pioneer last fall. Several persons took the idea up warmly, and
within a few days subscription lists
had been placed in nearly every store
in Nelson, while others were on their
way to every city of importance in
British Columbia and the west generally.
In all, 192 lists were sent out, and
tho result has been that a considerable stun hns been raised, though
even the amount of the total fund is
not yet known, as the lists have not
been called in, it being decided that
the fund should close on March 31
next.
The first business of the meeting
was to elect officers, who were selected as follows: President, John T.
Matone; secretary, S. M. Brydges ;
treasurer, J. M. Lay; executive committee, H. V. Rudd, F. A. Starkey,
William Irvine, J. A. Irvine, Alexander McDonald, W. F. Teetzel, Thos.
Sargeant, William Shackelton, G.W.
Holmes and Frank Phillips.
RED CAPS FOR HUNTERS.
The chief game warden of Wisconsin has recommended that all deer
hunters wear red caps while out in
the woods. Red is a color so different from the prevailing tints in the
forest during the deer season that
he feels confident the wearing of red
caps will prevent hunters from killing one another in mistake for deer.

to the casual observer it signifies little of importance in view of existing
party conditions in the legislature,
in reality produces a curious and

reformers like Jim to succeed in the

This is the encouraging report
brought back to the coast by A. E.
McMaster, the steamship agent of
the G. T. P., who has just returned
to Prince Rupert after spending a 5-

It must not be understood that it
will he railroad all the way. From
the western point to the head ol
Lake Superior, however, the line will
be in regular operation. At Lake
Superior the train service will he

the lakes down to Sarnia, at which

by the Grand Trunk system right
down to all the great eastern connections.
The operation of this line will
bring the last west within touch of
the far east. It, heralds the great
chain that will then encircle the

NEGROES INVADING ALBERTA.
The Edmonton hoard of trade has
called the attention of the Interior
department to the influx of negro
settlors into the districts surrounding Edmonton, claiming thnt they
are driving out white settlers. It is
understood the minister has claimed
that ho could do nothing, ns they
have complied with the immigration
laws and came in as regular settlers.
During the past three years there
has been a steady influx into Edmonton of colored people from the South
principally from Oklahoma. It was
in 11108 that thc first rarty arrived
from the cotton fields of Oklahoma
and settled along the Grand Trunk
Pacific, the largest settlement being
nt Chip Lake, Since then there has
been a small but steady stream.
This year they are starting to come
in increasing numbers, and it Is said
that hundreds of them are heading
northward.
Five families, consisting of thirty-
four men, women and children, arrived direct from the cotton fields
last week. They are snid to be the
forerunners of a big invading army.
Most of them are taking up homesteads along thc G, T. P.
The forty below zero weather they
have struck has been a revolation to
them, nnd they are having trouble
keeping warm.

for public ownership and operation

CONSERVATIVES HOLD ANNUAL
MEETING AND ELECT OFFICERS.
Tbe annual meeting of the South
Fort George Conservatives was held
in their hall, on Fourth street, Tuesday evening, and resulted in the election of the following officers for the
ensuing term:
Hon. President, Hon. Richard McBride.
lion. Vice-President, Hon. Thomas
Taylor.
President, P. Campbell.
Vice-President, P. G. B. Bodeker.
Secretary-Treasurer, J. 0. Williamson.
Executive Committee: D. Brewster,
R. M. Burns, W. Rowat, W. Thorne,
Edward Roberts, A. Campbell, H,
Sutton.
A resolution was passed urging the
government the advisability of constructing a trail from the Blackwat-
er-Fort George road to connect with
the Fort George canyon, along the
most suitable route.
In support of this resolution it was
pointed out that the unusual snowfall experienced this winter points to
the possibility of very high water in
the spring, and this fact will have
the effect of deterring river boats
[rom ascending above the canyon as
early as during years in which the
water is normal. In consequence a
large amount of freight will have to
be stored at the southern approach
of the canyon and wait there till the
waters recede, unless a trail or road
is constructed to allow the removal
of what freight may congest at that
point.
In this connection the secretary
was instructed to secure the co-operation of the Quesnel association in
urging thc immediate construction of
this road. It is a matter of vital
import to both points.

THE ORIGIN OF Till. BELTED
PLAID.
Tbe original dress of the Highlander was the belted plaid, This
was a piece of tnrtan cloth, 2 yards
broad and 4 long, which was drawn
around the waist in nicely adjusted
folds nnd tightly buckled with a
belt. Thc lower part came down to
the. knees in much the same manner
as the modern kilt, while the upper
part was drawn up and adjusted to
the left shoulder, so thnt tjie right
arm might be perfectly free. This
upper part wan the plaid, which was
used as a covering for the shoulders
and body in wot weather, and when
tbe use of both arms was required it
was fastened across the breast with
a brooch, often curiously enriched. A
brooch was also used to fasten the
plnid on the left shoulder.
To at lire himself in the belted
plnid required on the part of thc
Highlander no small amount of dexterity. Thc usual way was to lay it
on tie Moor and after carefully arranging the folds to lie down upon
it and (hen buckle it on. The lower
end was faotened at the right hip,
The utility of BUcll n dress 111 the

in the open air in the most Inclement weather, while the loose undergarment enabled him to wade rivets
or ascend mountains with equal
ease. It. was this peculiarly adapted
to tiie warrior, the hunter nnd the
shepherd,
