(luring bis recent trip to the coast,
which he was informed that the
natter of tbe South Fort George
_nail going over to Central would be
Remedied and that tbe postmaster
had been given instructions to open
111 the mail here and sort the bags

been given, ile bad again written

Brnii'.l the board that he had wait-
on tin' minister o( works, while
Victoria,, and that gentleman in-
cirmed him that two ferries across
Kraser river at South Fort
■George, were under contemplation,
fand had so far advanced that the
oad superintendent had instructions
to select the most suitable points for
' their establishment.
The regular monthly meeting day
of the board is thc third Tuesday in
the month, but owing to the dancing
club holding their weekly practices
on that evening, the following Wed
nesday has been selected as thr. day
of meeting.
The following resolution caused
a spirited discussion and brought out
a number of points as to whether the
board should constitute itself a
champion for those who buy lots on
paper. Only one dissentient voice
was recorded against the resolution.
It reads:
That in view of the fact that
there have been between two and
three thousand acres subdivided into
lots, in the vicinity of Fort George,
giving between 20,000 and 30,000
lots, and as statistics of Western Canada show generally a population in cities of three people to one
lot, this would mean that there are
enough lots sold and on the market
in Fort George to accommodate a
city with a population of from sixty
to ninety thousand residents. And,
furthermore, that as the Grand
Trunk Pacific railway's acquisition of
thc reserve — 1366 acres — will further embellish the total number of
lots sold by ten thousand. And as
it will be many years before there is
any chance of their being that number of people in this neighborhood,
we, the memb.'s of the South Fort
George Board of Trade, believe that
a great many purchasers of lots in
the district will lose all moneys invested. We also are of the opinion
that a great many lots in this district have been sold under misrepresentation; that the line of the G. T.
P. has been changed time and time
again to show the said line running
through the subdivisions for sale. In
view of these facts, and for tho protection of the unsuspecting and credulous investing public,
Resolved, That the South Fort
George Board of Trade demand an
investigation by the government into
the methods adopted by lot-selling
concerns in and around Fort
George, and further, that if it is
found that lots have been sold under
misrepresentation, that tbe perpetrators of these schemes be brought to
justice.
COULD'NT MAKE CENTRAL IN
FOUR HOURS.
The first commercial traveller in
the district, Thomas -Hall, of R. P.
Rithet, Victoria,, bad a trying time
Wednesday. The traveller came to
town Monday, and after doing a
good business in South Fort George
he thought he would go over to Central and have a look at the wildcat
in the snow cage. Accordingly, in
company with Dr. Lazier, he left
here at 4 o'clock Wednesday to pay
a visit to the much-advertised jack-
pine flat.. There is no broken road
between here and Central, /or the
simple reason that there is no travel
thither. A road had to be broken.
At first the pair rather enjoyed the
exhilarating work of clearing a right
of way for Hamilton's greys, but as
they proceeded they found the snow
getting heavier and deeper and with
no habitations in sight as the approached the western line of the reservation, Hall concluded that he
would retrace his steps and make
for town ere darkness overtook the
pair. They arrived at South Fort
George at eight that evening. Hall
says that people in this big country
have no idea of distance. When he
comes up in thc spring he says he
will start for Central in the morning instead of the afternoon. He left
/for the coast Thursday, without a
glance at Hammond's homestead and
"Brace's" source of revenue.

ICE STORAGE.
Contractor R. C. Danforth is erecting a building on the northern
lots in block 13, 934, which will be
utilized for tbe storage of ice and
a wood and coal yard. The location
is a good one for such a purpose, being on tbe waterfront and adjoining
the Hudson's Bay tract. W. F. Cooke
one ot the owners in the new venture, has a force of men at present
engaged in cutting ice on the Fraser
river opposite the property in question. The ice is 18 inches thick and
as clear as crystal. One hundred
tons will be stored. The supplying
of water to the town is another object held in view by the new company.
" Chilco" Washed Down River by Ice Jam
The steamer Chilco is a t<Hal
j wreck, and Captain Bonser's boat no
longer will ply the tortuous Fraser
(from Quesnel to Tete Jaune Cache.
In eagerness to bring through a
shipment of freight from Quesnel late
last fall the Chilco arrived at Fort
George canyon to find that gorge
blocked with ice.
The boat was beached and subsequently berthed for the winter at
t'hil-chit-la, six miles above the
mouth of the Blackwater river.
Most of the freight was removed
from thc boat and cached on the
uver bank.
A watchman was placed on the
Iboat and everything was believed to
lb.' safe. No provision, however, was
|m,.iit! for an ice jam at the mouth of
TJlackwater, which unfortunately
lacked water 12 ft. high to where
lhe Chilco was, washed the fat-bot-
l.iin away from bcr moorings and
parried her into deeper water. When
%he freeze up came tho boat was submerged to the hurricane deck, and
OLDEST HANK IN CANADA.
The oldest of tbe British banks in
lAmerica is the Bank of British
IN.irth America, which has a branch
In South Fort George, and was the
■first institution to enter the district,
past spring..
The Montreal World, in a review
"' the financial institutions of the
pominion, hns the following to say
aboul this bunking institution:
Tho Hank of British Nortli America -us established in 1836, and Incorporated by Royal Charter in 1840.
It bus a paid-up capital of £1,000,-
"00, a reserve fund of £530,000, and
undivided profits of over £30,000.
This pioneer among British banks in
America has 76 establishments in the
Dominion of Canada.
The bank has branches In all the
"".st Important cities in the Domln-
'"D, and a branch has also been established at Dawson, in the Yukon
liistrict, since tbe early days of the
Klondike rush.
An indication of the strength of
the institution is shown by the fact
•hut the profits for the last half-
War of 1909, including £18,535 2s lOd
"fought forward, were £84,622 7s lid
or over $400,000. A dividend of 30s
l"'r share antl a payment of 10s per
snare bonus then made brought the
^stribution for the year 1909 up to
' per cent.
The confidence of tho people of Ca-
"ada in this bank is found In the
'act that there are deposits of over
"11,000,000 in the various branches.

to.'.uy nothing can be seen but the pilot house and the upper woodwork.
The destructive work will be further
competed when the break up occurs
in the spring.
The Lavoy Brothers, who have r
pre-emption a short distance below
Blackwater, sent a letter to William
Kennedy to the effect that boxes,
bales of hay and all kinds of wreckage had been passing by their landing.
Wm. Blair & Co. had $9000 worth
of freight on board the boat at the
time she waB berthed. All of it, it
is believed bore, was transferred to
shore. The backwater has evidently
also washed this away, and may account for what the Lavoy Brothers
saw floating down stream.
The boat was owned by the Fort
George Timber & Navigation Co., of
South Fort George, and was one ot
the most profitable ones on the
river.
The Chilco was the only craft to
ascend the Fraser above South Fort
George last summer.
They are holders of consols, National War Loan, Exchequer Bonds, Dominion of Canada Bonds, etc., to the
extent of ,2,7-0,000, und cash on
band and nt call aud at short notico amounts to over $16,000,000.
The court of directors, as thc governing body Is known, consists of
men whose names are known to
bankers and financial men on both
lidos uf .he Atlantic. While thc public at large may not know so much
of these gentlemen, it does know of
them indirectly by the class of men
who represent the bank throughout
Canada. Mr. 11. Stikeraan, of Montreal, the general manager of the B.
N. A., is a leading financier of thc
Dominion. It is largely duo to his
foresight nnd intimate knowledge of
Dominion banking conditions that
the bank has continually gained in
prestige since he nssumed control.
The officers and employees of the
Hank of British North America are
made to feel, from the time of their
entry into the bank's service a sense
of responsibility and trusteeship in
thc highest form. There Is in a bank
of the age and standing of tho Bank
of British North America a solidarity and an esprit do corps in all departments of the administration that
has only been gained by constant devotion to high ideals as to the service to be rendered the public and an
instilling of those ideals into the
mind of each and every subordinate.
The bank has never stood still nor
reached a place where it considered
itself ns having reached the limit of
its possibilities.
On Friday morning the glass recorded 30 above. The weather all
week has been hovering around 20
above with no wind.
NEW HOUSE FLAG.
There are no G. T. P. people within a distance of two hundred miles
of South Fort George, the closest
being G. L. Gunn, surveyor, working
below Quesnel on the G. T. P. Fort
George-Vancouver branch. In order
that residents in the district be in a
better position to distinguish the
railroad people from those who do
not enjoy the distinction, it will be
necessary to memorize the colors of
the new house flag recently unfurled
by the G. T. P. railway Co. The flag
in future will be composed of a red
ground in the centre of which is a
white circle. A green maple leaf appears on the white ground of the
circle and across the green leaf the
letters G. T. P. appear in white.
EMPLOYERS RESPONSIBLE.
That under the new Provincial Liquor act an employer must be held
responsible for the actions of his
employees was unmistakably shown
in a case at Vancouver, before Stipendiary Magistrate Alexander last
week, when the Sechelt SS. Company was fined $100 because one of
their stewards sold liquor on board
the steamer Tartar without a license. The steward was also fined a
similar sum.
INDUCTED.
The Rev. Mr. Stott was formally
inducted into thc pastorate of the
local Presbyterian church last evening by the Rev. Duncan Campbell,
ol Armstrong, B. C, who was delegated to perform the ceremony at
the last session of the Kamloops
Presbytery. A goodly number braved the elements to witness the induction which was impressive in many
features. After a short sermon on
the Church of God, and its significance, thc Rev. Campbell put to Mr.
Stott the formal questions prescribed by the church and then iu
more informal remarks to the newly
installed pastor and congregation,
he made note of the obligations and
privileges enjoyed by all in church
associations, predicting a bright future for the local society that has
so generously and faithfully supported the pastorate.—Observer, 14.
From the Gold and Dross corner of
Toronto Saturday Night;
N. G.: No, don't take any
stock in the Fort George Town-
site Company promoted by the
Natural Resources Company. The
truth is not in them any more
than it is in the British Columbia papers that boost their game.
So far as ,1 am able to ascertain
the N. R. C. has never told the
truth for two consecutive minutes in regard to their proposition, and tbe post office department could do worse than look
up their literature, past and present.
NEW YEAR'S IN OLD BARKER-

A smoking concert was held on
Saturday evening by a number of
the residents. Thomas A. Blair was
unanimously voted to thc chair and
in a humurous speech said ho hoped
those present would enjoy themselves
and have a good time. A musical
program was then gone through, to
which thc following contributed:
Messrs. W. Fletcher, Dave Hardy,
Savage, Ferguson and Alexander
(violinist). Thc singing of Auld
Lang Syno brought the concert to a

Toronto Saturday Night.
"Canada," the weekly illustrated
journal published in London, has an
article in a recent issue under the
caption "The Gentle Art of Selling
Townsites." "Canada" is more or
less authority with British investors
on Canadian subjects, and tbe editor
of this magazine, Mr. W. Lefroy,
takes occasion to warn hist readers
against, the situation as it exists today in Fort George, British Columbia.
After pointing out that the building of new lines of railway must result in progress in developing British Columbia, "Canada" takes up
the railway situation and states
that in the centre of the province,
about 400 miles east of Prince Rupert and 500 miles northeast of Vancouver, a great valley has been opened up through the centre of which
the Grand Trunk Pacific railway is
to pass. In the centre of this valley
is situated the town of Fort George.
The G. T. P. has decided to make
this a divisional point.
Then "Canada" points out that up
to tbe present time there have been
put on tbe market no less than five
townsites, of Fort George, each of
which has been described as the real
and only authenticated townsite of
Fort George. Toronto Saturday
Night blazed the way originally by
drawing attention to the wonderful
activities of the Natural Resources
Security Co. in the matter of town-
sites, thus warning the Canadian investor to be sure before he leaped.
"Canada" now performs the same
service for the British investor. Tbe
article states:
As a matter of lata, there is only
one Fort George. That is to say,
there is only one townsite the regis
tered name of which is Fort George.
The unfortunate part of it is that
the townsite which is registered as
Fort George is not where the town
will ultimately be—not, at any rate,
within the present generation. There
is no doubt that the townsite on
which the railway will make its
headquarters is that at present called South Fort George, which is suitably located on tbe south bank of
the Fraser river, a magnificent navigable stream on which a regular line
of steamers ply. The names of the
five townsites which have already
been put upon the market with the
object of enticing the speculative
public are: South Fort George, Central Fort George, McGregor Addition, Fort George, and Collins' Addition. Each of these, in turn, hag
been "written up" and described as
the one and only genuine townsite of
Fort George.
A firm called the Natural Resources Security Company, Ltd., with
head office in Vancouver, have been
largely interested in selling three of
these townsites. They first of all advertised the McGregor Addition,
which, as a matter of fact, seems
less visionary than the other two
townsites which they sold later.
Then they advertised Central Fort
George, which lies farther away from
the Fraser river than the McGregor
addition. Third and last, tbey are at
present engaged in selling lots in
in "Fort George," which is situated
on the banks of the Nechaco river, a
tributary of the Fraser river. The
Nechaco joins the Fraser just below
the old Hudson's Bay fort, and at
the mouth of it are two islands in
mid Btream, which so fill the channel
that the river cannot be aaid to be a
stream fit for navigation by vessels
of any size. Where the Nechaco
enters the Fraser, sand bars have
formed to such an extent that even
the flat-bottomed river steamers
have great difficulty in getting up to
the much-boomed townsite of "Fort
George."
The townsite this company are now
selling is in truth the only townsite
of which the "registered" name ig
Fort George. This fact they use as
one of their strongest drawing cards.
But because it happens to be the
only townsite whose "registered"
name is Fort George, it does not follow that it is the place where the
town or city will eventually be located. In fact, it may be said that
:in all human probability tbe town
will certainly not be located there.
as this townsite possesses no;." of
the advantages possessed by . >e Indian reserve or South Fort George.
It is on the banks of a small river
quite unfit for shipping of any size;
and it is nearly two miles away
from the point where the G. T. P.
railway will, in the natural course of
things, build their wharves, and
probably their station, although in
this connection it must be said that
it has not yet been definitely announced exactly where the station
will be.
Giscombe Pre-Emptors and their Mall
Giscombe Portage is an interesting
historical point. All tbe early explorers have visited the place. It
is 41 miles north of South Fort
George, on the Fraser river. It is
one of the avenues into the Omineca
country, and is the source—or rather
Summit Lake, eight miles distant —
of the Parsnip, Findlay and Peace
rivers, that empty into the Arctic.
Around and in the vicinity of this
point is a good country. Some 27
settlers have located there, and all
are apparently satisfied with their
pre-emptions. There is a store there
conducted by Sebach & Huble, and
has been in existence for five years.
The 27 pre-emptors have been agitating for a postoffice and some means
for getting mail at least once in six
monthB. The present arrangements
are as primitive as man can find.
They have not had a mail since November of last year, and in order to
A RICH MINING COUNTRY TAPPED BY THE G.T.P. WEST
OF FORT GEORGE.
Ralph P. Trimble, of Portland, Oregon, a Couer d'Alenes mining man,
and P. D. Pemberton, a wealthy
mining man of Victoria, B. C, have
made the preliminary payment of $3-
000 on their $65,000 bond given to
W. S. Sargent and C. Munro, both
of Hazelton, for two groups of
claims on Rouche de Boule mountain, southeast of Hazelton and two
miles from the main line of the G. T
P. railway.
One group is a sulphate-copper
proposition, showing the rather
startling average assays of from 15
to 31 per cent, on two big leads, and
carrying fair gold values. The other
group shows two big leads of fine
concentrating silver-lead galena averaging $60 and is the result of sev-

point on a set day, and draw lots
to see who will be the lucky man to
break a 41-mile trail with snow-
shoes from Giscombe to South Fort
George. The short ttraw this year
fell to E. A. Sebach, possibly because he has more correspondence
than any other individual man at
that point. A strange coincidence,
however, is that the same man has
broken the trail for four consecutive
years, and he feels doubly sore at
being a Dominion servant without
a salary. On one of these trips Ed.
had both feet frozen, and today carries evidences of what pioneer work
is in the north. With all the handicaps in his way, Ed. Set__ch came
down in two days. Accompanying
him were Roy Clemens and Billy Mc-

Mr. Sargent, one of the locators of
the property, speaking to an 0.1
mist man at Rupert, of the disl.;
around Hazelton, says: "Jus. e
fore leaving for Ruiert Foreman
Griswold of the Lead King, brought
into camp some of the best looking
silver-lead ore I have ever seen. He
told me they had from 8 to 18 inc.
of solid galena and the vein matter
was at least three feet wide. The assays were sent to Prince Rupert and
I expect to see some high values.
The Harris Brothers have what appears to me to be the biggest find
on Nine Mile Mountain. Their work
just now is sinking on the largest
lead on their ten claims known as
the American Boy group. The ore is
a very clean cube pn'onn w'th silver
values running as high as 800 oz."

Mayor Morley, Victoria, and Mayor Taylor, Vancouver, have been returned with increased majorities. J.

and Wm. Manson, Prince Rupert.
J. A. Hayward, member for Cow-

deputy speaker of the legislature.

Contrary to general expectations
no mention is made in the speech
from the throne forecasting a reconstruction of the land policy of the
province of British Columbia. With
such an omission from such a por-
tentious document of so important a
subject, the public must rest content
in the belief that the wishes of the
Conservative party, expressed at the
Nelson convention will obtain with
the government. The B. 0. land act
in the past thirty years has been a
"free-for-all" among the sages in the
legislative hall, people who have had months'to begin
nice discernment and powers of judging, until today it stands as
the first in all the land policies of the world. It would, indeed,
be a moneyless policy on the part of
the government were they to do

A NEW SCHEME FOR DIVIDING
THE YEAR.
Dr. Thomas Chrowder Chamberlin,
professor of geology in the University of Chicago, would reform and
simplify the current calendar. Being
one of the. most famous geologists,
Dr. Chamberlin is familiar with time
through countless ages. He writes
to Science:
"I venture to suggest a calendar
that embodies many of thc excellent
suggestions already made, but instead of introducing a thirteenth
month, make use of only twelve
months of four weeks (twenty-eight
days), bunching these into four
groups and placing the remaining
four weeks between these groups, so
as to set out the four seasonable
quarters of the year distinctly."
Like all men devoted to scientific
accuracy, Dr. Chamberlin seems to
feel that the year is divided arbitrarily now.
HIS PLAN
The integers of his proposed calendar are:
Quarters: Corresponding measurably to the four seasons.
Months: Twelve of 28 days (four
weeks), each, assembled in groups of
three terminated by a single closing
week with a special designation. All
on Monday, as sug
gested by Patterson.
Weeks: Fifty-two of seven days
each, all beginning with Monday.
Forty-eight of the weeks, in groups
of four each, constitute tbe twelve
months. The remaining four weeks
of tie 52, viz., the thirteenth, the
twenty-sixth, the thirty-ninth and
the fifty-second, to be attached severally at the end of the four three-
nlways be Julian Thursday. The Julian week might well come to cm-
brace the observances thn t mark the
end of the educational year.
"The Georgian week would fall at
a time well suited to the harvest Ics-
tivities, the lairs, etc.
"The authors of thc rectifications
that gave us our present calendar
are recognized in the manner of the
Julian and Georgian weeks."

EXTENDS CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
Prof. Chamberlin's scheme should
be popular, for by it the Christmas
holidays are made longer. He writes:
' "In the matter of holidays, the
scheme seems to lend itself fairly
well to current practice, and is perhaps well suited to mould future
practice as well. The 28th day of
December would always full on a
Sunday and be the immediate forerunner of Christmas. Christmas itself would always fall on the Monday of Christmas week. Our greatest holiday would thus have a distinctive place of its own at the head
of its special week, instead of falling
in thc midst of a month and on a
constantly shifting day of the week.
The winter holiday season would be
closed usually by New Year's Day,
but on every fourth year by Leap
Day, following New Year's Day. The.
Christmas holidays would thus be
lengthened to nine days or ten days.
"EaBtcr week would always begin
on Monday, the 85th day of the yen,
and the days of tbe week might have

Close & Brown announce the arrival of a shipment of turkeys. The
very thought of this compresses
one's lips into a pout of portentous
delight.
H. 8. Martin nnd Win. Foster who
have taken holdings near Bob Brit-
tle's cabin at Cottonwood canyon,
returned to QueBnel by canoe from
the canyon on the 10th, after a short
stay at their pre-emptions.
The freighters and ferrymen at
Quesnel have been experiencing great
difflculty in getting their freight
across the river the past fortnight,
on account of the extreme cold. Now
that the river is frozen over it will
be a much easier matter for all who
have occasion to cross.
L. C. MacHaftie was married to
Miss Myrtle Eftie McLean, at Hed-
ley, II. 0., on the 3rd instant, and
the bridal couple are now in California on their honeymoon. Rev. H.
Cameron performed the ceremony,
and the wedding was a iniiet one,
attended only by the immediate relatives nnd friends of the contracting
parties. H. A. Hincks, manager of
the Bank of B.N.A., at Heiiley, was
best man. Mr. and Mrs. MacHaffie
will arrive here February 13, where
L. G. resumes the management of
the lirst bank established in the district at South Fort Oeorge. May
they have a good trip in over the
Cariboo road, and on all other avenues in life's walk, is tbe sincere
wish of Tbe Herald.
Tbe Fort George Timber & Navigation Co. are erecting an ice-storing
building at the rear of the company's premises. The ice will be taken from the Fraser river.
C. M. Wright, the Presbyterian divine, will hold services in the school
house Sunday evening at 7 o'clock.
C. M. Brown, of Close & Brown,
leaves on Monday for Vancouver, on
a month's business trip.
Mail came in on Monday at 4:30,
earliest this year. It makes no difference how early it comes in, it always is taken to the graveyard.
The second white child born in the
district came to the residence of W.
Halm Sunday night. It was a baby
girl and both mother nnd child are
doing well. Mrs. Halm, it will be remembered, was the first white woman to land at South Fort George
Irom a boat last May, and in honor
of the event the Northern Development Co., presented Mrs. Halm with
a lot. The first white birth was
Ueorgina Mclnnis, daughter of John
Mclnnis, ex-M. P. P.
W. L. Collins, ..chief trading factor
of the Hudson's Hay at Quesnel, arrived in South Fort George last
Saturday. It was his semi-annual
visit, and is simply amazed with
the amount of building that lias taken place since he was here last May.
Old time factors had a way of traveling all their own, and according to
books, outdid the Moguls of India in
their punctilious display. Thc factors in days long gone were lifted in
and out of their canoes while travelling, and one instance is related of
• corpulent factor who had a cranelike device in his equipment as e.n
•miliary in embarking and disembarking at posts. This practice is
not now in vogue, however, but the
breaking of the tongue in the sleigh
•nd the upsetting of W. L. in a snow
drift on the Blackwater load on his
way in, shows that early factors
were wise people and made provision
for just such accidents. Accompanying W. L. was M. Montgomery, lineman, at Blackwater, who also was
agreeably surprised at the amount of
building that has taken place here.
Both left for home on Tuesday morning.
