nl the regular meeting of the
dty council held Monday evening.
Many important matters were
under discussion and a lot oi
Imsiness was transacted. The
council did not conclude Its session till well on to one o'clock
in the morning.
One ol the most  Important
items dealt with which was the
lirst business un the docket was
the extension ol 3rd slreet
through the Indian Mission.
A number of the chiefs were
present, with chief Jimmy Harry as their spokesman. Ik-
said a meeting of the members
ol the tribe had been held, and
thev had decided to withdraw
llieir demands lor iree light ami
water, and instead would ask
for a cash compensation for the
amount of land which would be
utilised by the street at the rate
ol > 10,000 an acre. The city
engineer advised that the street
would take up about two and
one-third acres. The chiel complained ol the way which the
government handled llieir money which was derived from the
sale of Indian lauds. His expression was that they put it
away in strong l>ox and ihe Indians could not obtain any lor
the improvement ol then noma

ineuded that the cily purchase

consumption of the throat for
some time, but was otherwise
in the best of health, and it
was only yesterday that he was
in Vancouver in his usual state
of health. Mayor May nut him
on thc street, and after a hand
shake, Joe assurred him of his
support in connection with the
city's dealing with the Mission
Indians.
Last night the chief complained of sleeplessness, aiid (luring
the early hours ol the morning
was troubled with choking fits.
