Centrnl shows up in many places
along tin- mute und beyond crossing tlio mouths of a few streams
tin- country sct'ius most adapted
tor railway construction. The
Windermero and Oolden people
an' expecting its advent in the
near future, in fact several people
to whom we sij-nki', ami who mc
nu.xious to see our towns at this
end of tho valley, stated that they
might just as well wait now am!
come liy train. It is wonderful
what [iniLirt'ss has been made in
tin' upper country during the past
live years, at which time I spent,
several months in tlie Windermere
country, a great deal of fresh land
having been brought under cultivation and the telephone lias been
installed, giving connection with
lhe mines, towns nnd a good many
farms. The country seems most
suitable for fruit growing, as
several orchards which we wont into made a tine showing, the trees
being strong and healthy nnd
wliere they had not already been
picked tlie irees were laden with
fruil. which wns of a very tine
quality without a trace of disease
of any kind. We also saw several

mi ti large scale. L^roui a mining
standpoint, a good tonnage ol ore
should be produced from lliis section. The Kootenay Central will
certainly bring a great couniry iu
touch with (he world's markets,
Whal struck us almost ns much as
anything was the great number of
sniall streams running across the
road at intervals of from one-half
tn iw.. miles, which seems loatt'ord
great possibilities for irrigation,
The walk from Oolden to Calgary
was along lhe main line of the 0.
V. It. on ihe ties, fortunately,
ths road was very well ballasted,
which made the walking good.
The scenery through the Kicking
Morse canyon, and in fact all the
way to Kaunnaskis. was grand, and
in walking, we had the advantage
in boiug able lo see it almost
thoroughly instead of dashing past
iii a train.
The weather was remarkably
e and we only experienced one
wet doy, and thai wns at (iolden.
The big hill at Field was very in-
leresling. nlso a freight train
iiscendiug this hill wliich seemed
it first glance to be composed
mostly of engines, uud this made
us think more favorably than ever
f tin' Kootenay Centrnl and its
ecessity. We spent a few days
at ISniill and Calgary, and at the
latter plnce took a trip over the
Bow river to the irrigation works
nud found Mr. Breckeuridge* well
and busy as usual. Ile has a great
work iu linud and we found it most
Interesting, We hnd good luck,
always maiuigiiig to strike a stop,
ping place of some sort. From
Calgary wo took a train home via
Macleod, Altogether thn trip was
most enjoyable and after the first
few days we did not feel the walking at till. l*'or walking days we
averaged ^7 miles per dny.
