Oh for those good old days! Oh to be
a kid again! Oh to have a restless sleep
in the hay-mow, with Old Nell munching
away in her stall below, and daylight too
long delayed in coming! Oh for the tang
of the'early morning, the cold dew on the
grass and the warm dust in the country
road!   Oh heck!
WHAT BOOKS SOMETIMES TELL
CIRCUS  DAYS
WERE you ever a kid? Did you ever
get up at 3 o clock in tha mirnin? and
walk away over into the next concession,
maybe three or four miles to meet the circus coming to town? And do you remember how cold the dew was on the grass, and
even the stones hid lost the heat they had
accumulated the day before, and what a
relief it was to the wizzened up footsies
when you found a dusty place that had remained warm. My, my!
But kids now-a-days don't go barefooted. They are more civilized, perhaps,
but they are missing some of the joys that
we used to know, although those joys
sometimes carried a sting.
These thoughts occur because there
are circus bills posted around town.
We will bet that not a kid in Stewart
will sleep in the barn over night in order
to get up early enough to meet the outfit
coming in; then to fix it with the boss to
carry water to the old decripit elephant in
order to get a free ticket; then the parade
and such a parade! Real, genuine Arabian shieks attending to the elephant and
camel; the steam caliope shrieking its popular airs; the prettiest lady in all the
world riding in a luxurious sedan aboard
of some animal and the clown joshing
It is said that an editor's business
diary, when kept, makes most interesting
reading, which statement one day prompted a statistically-inclined editor in a southern B.C. mining town in the early days
to laboriously keep one for 12 months, but
no longer, for the paper used in keeping
it mere than ate up the cash in hand at
the end of that time, as will be seen from
the following balance sheet of profit and
loss. Been broke 361 times; praised the
public 39 times; roasted the public 5 times;
praised by the public, 1; told lies 593 times,
missed prayer meeting 52 times; washed
office towel 1; bought new towel 0; been
*
roasted 821 times; roasted others 29 times;
mistaken for a preacher 19 times; mistaken for a capitalist 0; got whipped 4 times;
whipped others 1; cash on hand at beginning of year, $2.47; cash on hand at end
of year 17c. All of which is respectfully
submitted, with the recommendation that
the practice of keeping this record be discontinued.
