W.H.Watson reunded up Tommy McLeod with his pipes, and LATEST FROM THE BIG MIKE The Hia Mike mining property which is responsible for the latest ore sensation of the camp, shows two feet of a vein with 18 inches of solid ore, according to the owners who drove a short crosscut tunnel from the creek and cut it a few feet below the surface. Closest to the surface the ore is mostly decomposed quartz, containing a considerable amount of cube galena with carbonates, and some free goljj, while towards the floor of the tunnel the ore is more solid, containing a large amount of pyrr- hotite and a smaller amount of galena, but still flecked here and there with the precious metal, thetwo marched ahead of the | It is said that a number of pros- STEWART GENERAL HOSPITALlflOG CONTEST SPEEDING UP four-horse team that pulled a big wagon and was followed by a truck. The concluding paragraph in the report of H.G.White, M. E., E. C. I., A. P. E., who made a thorough examination of the mine last summer is as follows: "The object I have kept in view in the work alluded to in this report, has been to ascer- Three tons of this ore are pads-! ta'*1 actual values upon which a ing through Stewart daily now I reliable degree of dependence and being piled on thc wharf. The ore is hauled down by "go- devils" to the Bear River road, there loaded onto sleighs, hauled by them to the eastern end of Fifth street and again transferred to trucks or wagons. These can be placed, not to deal with hopes or prospects, and for this reason I have kept down the allowance of ores in place to what I actually know will be turned into money as a result of mining, and it would be out of place for me, in view of my instructions, to go any further or to make any predictions as to the nature of the property: but it two transfers run up the ship-1 must De clearly understood that Ping cost, and too much of this i the values I give are those found is not desired. Since then it has been in continuous operation, although at times it has been a hard struggle to meet expenses. That a need exists for this institution is proven by the fact that it now contains six patients. If every member of the community did his small share toward supporting the hospital, its upkeep would not be a serious problem; but indifference (to put it mildly) on the part of some residents who have never been unfortunate enough to require its benefits and who, like Cain, accept no responsibility for the welfare of others, makes the burden for supporters of the institution heavier than it should be. rr \* STEWART-HYDER LOCAL NEWS Which is the most popular dog in Stewart? Clothier, resident engineer for this district, with headquarters in Prince Rupert, has gone to Victoria to prepare his section of the annual report L & L GLACIER DEVELOPMENTS Cross Vein Theory Worked Out by Wm Irwin Proves CorrectNew Veins Arc Opened Up Most encouraging developments are being made at the L&L Glacier Creek property, according to the superintendent, Wm. Irwin, who was in town this week, and who is working on a cross vein system theory with apparent success. In the upper, or No. 1 tunnel, where the vein was lost, apparently by faulting, a drift has been run for 90 feet along the fault line, and the face now shows 2\ feet of good-looking ore. Evidently the fault marked the strike of a cross vein that had pinched out where encountered by the tunnel. The continuance of the vein followed by the tunnel has not yet been picked up, but this is only a matter of time and work. Dropping down the hill' to a point near the glacier, and about 100 feet vertical depth below No. 2 tunnel, a crosscut was driven into the hill and at 35 feet another cross vein was encountered which shows galena, iron pyrites and quartz and had been penetrated three feet without reaching the hanging wall, when Mr Irwin left the camp. Tracing out the strike of the main vein on the surface, a pit was sunk through the surface wash at a point where the contact between aese two veins should be, and the fact was established that there is such a contact. The pit or open cut fills in with caving gravel however almost as fast as it can be shoveled out, and no further work was done there after the desired information was gained. Working with a crew of only four men, an extraordinary amount of underground development has been accomplished since Wm. Irwin took charge early in the winter. It is reported from the south that the construction ot a concentrating mill is contemplated, and the opening up of additional veins on the property by the new superintendent will greatly strengthen the advisability of such an undertaking. has installed it in his house near | of the Minister of Mines Howard Cameron, who has had charge of considerable development work in this district, is wintering in Seattle. B.C. W. J. WAKEFIELD Light and Heavy Transfer Wood for Sale We Buy Bottles A Place To Spend Your Spare Time WELCOME POOL HALL Good Tables Cigars Cigarettes and Tobaccos Norman Fleming & Bert Heath Cor. 5th & Columbia, Stewart We have become so accustomed to reading tangled reports concerning this section that it takes something particularly atrocious to engender more than a glimmer of a smile. But recently a friend sent in a clipping from a Coeur d'Alene paper pertaining to be an interview with an oldtimer of this district who is visiting there, and which, if it were not so amusing, would be shocking. Because this oldtimer is an all- round square-shooter as well as a friend of this paper, his name shall be kept secret in order to protect him from the shafts of ridicule that would surely be directed against him by some one pretending to believe that he said what he is reported to have said. We know what happenedhe talked about mining all over Alaska, which he knows like a book, and spoke particularly of activities in the Portland Canal district on both sides of the line. The reporter, in condensing the information into a column of newspaper space, tied himself into a knot, or else the moonshine produced in the Coeur d'Alenes is not conducive to clear thinking. Anyway, the part of the interview that is particularly funny is as follows: "On the Alaskan side of the international boundary there is only one producer at the present time, the Porter Idaho, located about three miles from the Premier and undoubtedly in the same ore zone. The property shipped about 300 tons of high- grade silver-gold ore during the last summer, mined within a short distance of the grassroots. This section in. my opinion is about the only known new lead district in any part of the North American continent that gives great promise of becoming an important producer of galena ores. Our short seasons and the lack of transportation has been a severe drawback to the country, but the question of transportaj tion has been somewhat relieved by the building of a railroad from Stewart to Fairbanks, a distance of about 400 miles, which penetrates a well-known mineral zone that no doubt has great possibilities." Enjoyable Masquerade A very successful masquerade dance in aid of St. Mark's Church was held at the Opera House on the evening of the 19th. Supper was provided by the ladies of the Women's Auxilary and an orchestra composed of Mrs G. C. Andrew, Mrs Wm. Jancowski, P. S. Jack, L.M. Gordon and Joe Cullen supplied the music. Prizes for the best lady's, gentlemen's and comic costumes, were won respectively by Miss Edith Crawford as a Spanish lady, Eric Smith as a beau of the time of George III, and Mrs W. Hanson, who appeared as Jiggs. GROCERY SPECIALS Northern Life Assurance Company wants representative, Whole or part time, policies issued, to age 45 without Medical examination up to $2500. Theo, Asimus, Box 323, Anyox, B. C. Send the News to a friend. Local Stocks (Quotations by H.W.M.Rolston & Co) Dunwell retained its new high level and on the slightest drop was eagerly bid for. The first shipment of Dunwell ore passed through Stewart at 3 p. m. on Monday. February 22, and since that date it is a familiar sight to see truck and wagon loads passing through town. It is understood most of this ore is to be used for experimental purposes to determine what class of mill to construct to treat the ore most economically. Glacier Creek, as usual, followed the lead of its sister property, the Dunwell mine, and is daily coming into greater demand. With the fact that the diamond drillers encountered a very promising ore body some 147 feet from the tunnel end, a much higher level for this stock is promised in the near future. Porter Idaho showed some activity in the early part of the week, and on the management making public their program for the summer operations, a better market is looked for in this stock Marmot Metals is rapidly becoming one of the favorites in the district. The southern markets are quickly absorbing all the cheap offerings; this, coupled with the fact that some very large ore deposits were discovered last fall too late for development before snow fell, assures a much higher level in this issue in the near future. B.C.Silver reached new high levels the last few days and as always is in steady demand. Premier, after its appearance of sluggishness, once more started on the upward climb. On the present market price of Premier it offers an exceptional mining investment, and it will not stay at its present low levels much longer. National Silver came into demand at slightly higher figures - -GOVERN MENT LIQUOR ACT" NOTICE OF APPLICATION FOR BEER LICENCE Notice is hereby given that on the 27th day of March next the undersigned intends to apply to the Liquor Control Board for a licence in respect of the premises being part of the building known as "Keith Hotel" situate at Hyder, B C, upon the lands described as Lots 34 and 35, Block 6, in Sub-divisjon of Lot 4044,Cassiar District, Map 1251, Prince Rupert Land Registration district, in the Province of British Columbia, for the sale of beer by the glass or by the open bottle for consumption on the premises. L&L Glacier is steadily increasing in demand. The local ^^^^ manager reports that everything j Saanich Blackberries is very favorable at the mine. The amalgamation of the Victoria and the Silver Ledge, lying, as it does, in close proximity to the Dunwell, brought this stock into demand. Independence has come into demand in the southern markets and showed higher prices with very little stock offering. The coming summer will be a' boon to the mining companies'Classic Cleanser who have properties of merit, ( owing to tne fact that practically no new incorporations have been j Quaker Brand formed and most of the older companies have properties that the public can feel safe in speculating in, with every chance of success. follows: Asked $ 1.90 225 .18 2s 25c Best Singapore Pineapple 2s 25c |Lynn Valley Pears 2s 25c Lombard Plums 2s 20c The market closed as Bid B.
