Standing by its Guns.
The Vancouver News-Advertiser, a
paper not at all unfrieinlly to the CL
P. K but one which i.-nnt lnd_ted to
toady to this oorpontkW, says in discussing the Corbin charter that :
"It is scarcely needful for us to say,
that we still hold the same opinion
which we beefy expressed last year,
when the question came prominently
to the fore in connection with a pto-
vious application to the Dominion parliament for the gnat of charter rights
to the well known railroad project!
with which, then as now. the name of
Mr. Corhin wns prominently associated.
We believe as the promoters and intending constructors and worken of
this railroad, which proposes to enter
and pass through fnun the south, a
portion of the richly mineralized
Boundary country, ask neitlier a provincial nor a Dominion subsidy, but
merely request the bestowal of tin-
usual other provisions of a Caiiadijui
railroad charter, their application
should I* conceded, it lieing very clear
that those behind t he proposal -mean
business.' Other charters— notably
tbat of the Nelson A Bedlington railroad—have been given to railroads
entering British Columbia from the
south, and making or intending to
make connections with great American trunk lines, and we see no adequate reason why, in the case of the
Kettle River project, a like state concession could not lie made. It is manifestly not only undesirable, but it has
also long lieen impossible to enclose
southern Canada by a kind of Chinese
wall, across which traffic, making to
or from the south of the International
boundary shall not lie allowed to proceed, and the other argument* against
tbe grant of the proposed charter are,
in our opinion, either inadequate or
untenable.''
