Quality and Price.
While W. T, Shatford & Co. are noted for the quality and
price of the goods sold by them. PROSPECTORS and
MINERS operating in the Similkameen and surrounding
mining carrps, would do well to outfit at one of our stores,
where everything i.s kept that i.s needed in the mining business.
Instead of buying outside, buy right at home, and so save
money, and this more particularly refers to prospectors going
into the district above referred to.

tto aakkmaflar the base and precious
metals.
In British Columbia where the formation! an §o varied, it would sewn not
wiMtoeoadmnany class of rocks as
muMoriatcd frith the deposits of tbe
precious metals, and this will he made
more plain lt Is believed, if the following artlcta Which was recently contributed to tht Iftland Sentinel by Mr.
0. F. Moncton, is carefully rood ami
thoroughly considered.
"Miners aw largely influenced in their
opinion of vein* by the class of rock
which form the walla. There it no
doubt that in any given region there
are certain kinds of .ticks which nre
favourable to ore deposits. It is not,
however, so much ll.e kind of rock as
the condition bt it which will give us
an indication of ore. In almost every
ruse the .vails of ore deposits have
undergone considerable alteration,
thus at the side of a vein in granite
tliere is usually a clny coupe, and the
same is the case with most rocks composed chiefly of felspar. Diabase and
diorite are largely altered to serpentine
or magnesiaii slate. .Slates traversed
by good veins are usually toft anil
black. In almost every kind of rock
known good veins have been found.
In Arizona, rhyolite carries them in
the Tombstone district, in Dakota
they occur in horneblende rock, iu
rhyolite, limestone, quartzite and
slates. In California the greatest
mines have lieen those on the contact
of slate and diabase. The famous
mine at Angels Camp is a mass of diabase altered to chlorite and taloose
schist, filled with irregular bodies of
quartz. At the Oliver mine two parallel veins occur Separated by slate and
having diabase for their other walls.
The Eureka and Idaho, of (irass Valley, are at the contact of diabase and
slateor serpentine, la-low which is a
wide belt of slate. In Eldorado the
most important mines are associated
with diabase or diorlteand slate or serpen tine. In Mariposa county, at tlie
Sirocco mine, gold occurs iu diabase as
well as in quartz traversing it. This
diabase is in part altered to chloritic
slate. In the Monte Negras district
the veins are in diorite and often contain much copper, ln Sau Bernardino
and some other countries, gold occurs I
in felsitic rocks. This is so in the case
of the pocket mines iu Mariposa county.
It is found in lipariteiuSan Benito and
in rhyolite at Calico. In Calaveras
county it has been found in volcanic
tuffs. At Oold Mountain it has been
found in quartzite, at Oro along the
contact of limestone and mica slate,
and in Mono county at the contact of
limestone and a dyke. The Alvord
rein a mass of limestone carrying
shoot* of iron ore, the whole carrying
gold, the footwall is diorite and the
hanging wall mica slate. In the Black
Hawk limestone carries gold. This
rack, associated with iron, carries it at
the Bote aad Christie. At Pinon
Mountain all tht -reins are in granite.
There it a group ol great mines on the
Bait Lode, whieh is a mineral belt ly
lag east of tht Mother Lode, which
occur in granite and rocks resembling
it. Aa thu belt runs northward the
veins lie in mica slate with associated
dikes, aad further north still run

Honora, the Uolden Gate is in diorite

basalts and the glnmy rocks have not
been found to carry gold so far. In
C'lilui'iwlii, graniteUMt-ociaied with diken

which has probably produoed more

word, was in granite and gneise. It
varied from a few Inches to 12 fret
wide, and was 2440 leet long. It produced $7,000,000. in Virginia the veins

of eruptive rock cut across .the slates.
Itis worth notliing, .vbilc speaking of
wall rooks, that veins in granite, gab*
broand similar rocks have generally
but one good wall. In such cases the
shoots aro often found to pinch out,1
and overlap, so thnt the hanging wall'
of one shoot becomes the footwall of
th" shoot of ore beneath it, and as each
shoot peters out the next one is found
by driving through the wull which was
well defined, At sueli an overlap tbe
ore in the shoot which has heen proved
by cross-cutting from the shoot wliieh
pinched out is likely to be found to lie
wider and of lower grade than the
average ore bub will narrow ilown and
