“Some copies printed on Dutch paper, ref. B.N. Catalogue. "En tête du tome IV est reliée une lettre de Claret de Fleurieu sur les différences de l'ed. in 4° et de l'ed. in 8° de son ouvrage":- B. N. Catalogue. "The all quarto version ... is to be preferred":- Graff. A meeting with Captain Portlock (no.450) led Marchand to undertake the only commercial expedition to the northwest coast by French nationals prior to Roquefeuil. Marchand's journal has not been published. The account of the voyage, though sometimes attributed to Marchand, is taken from the journal of Prosper Chanal, second captain, and the natural history notes are taken from the observations of the surgeon Roblet; both augmented by considerable editorial matter by Fleurieu, with a lengthy introductory essay summarizing the exploration of the northwest coast to 1790. The expedition made a valuable survey of the north-western portion of the Queen Charlotte Islands, with observations on Haida life and customs. Contents: vol.l
