"The author, one of the original members of the North-West Mounted Police, was appointed to take charge of a detachment detailed for duty along the C.P.R. construction line in British Columbia. He was also responsible for building a post in the Kootenays in 1887, and was later in command of the Force in the Yukon and British Columbia during the Klondike gold rush.
