"The author, an educated negro and an ardent civil rights worker, came to British Columbia in 1858 with a stock of goods for the Fraser River gold miners. He left Victoria in 1869 after achieving some prominence in local affairs. In five chapters (p. 59-106) he describes these years in British Columbia from 1858-1869." -- Lowther, B. J., & Laing, M.
