Reply to letter of "Old settler," published in the "Times" newspaper, on the selection of a terminus on the Pacific Coast for the proposed Canadian Pacific Railway. By a British North American Tolmie, William Fraser

Description

"'A British North American' is identified by the Victoria Colonist (27 November 1877, p. 3) as being Tolmie. The B.C. Provincial Archives also attributes it to Tolmie from the evidence of his manuscript notes. Gilbert Malcolm Sproat was accused by the Victoria Standard (20 and 21 February 1877, p. 3, 3) of being the 'Old Settler'; he emphatically denied this epithet in the Victoria Colonist, calling the accusation 'the deliberate concoctions of a scoundrel' (27 February 1877, p. 2)." -- Lowther, B. J., & Laing, M. (1968). A bibliography of British Columbia: Laying the foundations, 1849-1899. Victoria, BC: University of Victoria, p. 59.
