THE BENEFIT ASSOCIATION, in the interest of which this
Souvenir is published, is a society in which the Fire Boys
have banded themselves together for the purpose of mutual
aid and assistance. Realizing the danger to which he is exposed,
it is to his interest to contribute each month to this society. All
proceeds of dances and souvenirs go to the Relief Fund, as well as
a monthly tax on each of its members. The Relief Fund is maintained for the benefit of sick or disabled Firemen and is a most
necessary organization.
In conclusion, the Firemen's Benefit Association wish to thank
all who so kindly assisted them, both in the present or past, and also
the merchants who have so materially aided them, by their patronage, to successfully launch this work.

rr\HE FORMATION oi
I May, 1886. The ]
-*■ Schletsky's gent's
FORMATION of the first Fire Department in Vancouver was in
project having been discussed at first in George
s furnishing store, by the young men of the City.
A meeting was called early in May to be held in the old Court House
on Water Street, and there was organized the first Volunteer Brigade.
Those present at the meeting were: F. Peadgriff, J. A. Mateer, George
Schletsky and J. Moran, Peagriff being elected Chief.
The instruments in hand for fighting fire consisted of a few buckets,
shovels and axes, and the water supply, apart from the water of Burrard
Inlet, of a few mud holes and surface water.
The great fire of June 13th, 1886, caught the newly formed Brigade thus
equipped and showed the necessity of immediately providing the City with
the necessary implements to cope with the fire. This evil had been partly
remedied through the efforts of the mayor, the late M. A. McLean, who,
with the City Council, arranged for the purchase of a Ronald Fire Engine,
which was in transit at the time of the fire. It arrived in Vancouver about
July 20th, and was landed at Port Moody, then the nearest Station. Mr. R.
Rutherford had the distinction of bringing into the City the new engine,
having drawn it from Port Moody with his four horse team. The whole
population turned out en masse to greet the arrival. Having provided this
engine, things rested quietly until 1889, when W. McGirr organized a hook
and ladder company.
To show their appreciation of the efforts on behalf of the gentlemen
who had so nobly banded together to protect their property from destruction
by fire, a few of the ladies of the City formed a Coffee Brigade to serve coffee Walker & Dobbin

and sandwiches to the tired, cold, and oft times hungry workers, on their
return from a fire. This proved to be a very successful enterprise, and the
ladies who took part in it will long be remembered by the Vancouver Boys.
Among the most active of the number may be mentioned Mrs. Simons and
Mrs. W. A. Cameron, wife of the Chief F-ngineer. They were ably assisted
by T. Beckett, familiarly known as Barney Beckett the ladies' man of the
department.
At this time the members of the fire department presented a striking
appearance and were noted as athletes, so much so that having challenged
12 teams of America to compete with them in handling fire fighting apparatus, they defeated them all and also gained the championship from Rochester,
N. Y., which city had held the record for a number of years. The members
of the crack team were: J. McDonald, trainer; T. Dilly, captain; J. Moran,
S. H. Ramage, John Garvin, R. Rutherford, J. McKenzie, J. Douglass,
G. Thomas, jr., D. Biggar, C. Heywood, W. H. Saunders, J. Hall, H.
Hampbell, M. Montgomery, and Geo. Brown. On their return home they
were presented with gold medals by the citizens of Vancouver.
The second Chief elected after the removal of Peadgriff was J. Blair, who
held the office only for a short time, being succeeded by J. H. Carlisle, the
present Chief, who continued without interruption, except for a short time
in 1888, when Mr. Wilson McKinnon was elected. The hottest contested
election for Chief was between J. Mateer and J. H. Carlisle, when Carlisle
was re-elected by a majority of one.
The volunteer fire department was disbanded in 1889, the City's financial standing justifying them in maintaining a paid department.

CHIEF J. H. CARLISLE—Born, Hillsboro,
New Brunswick, Nov. 1858; former occupation,
teamster; appointed to his present position upon
the establishment of a full paid Department in
September 1889, and has been wonderfully successful in confining fires to buildings in which they
originated, and the small annual loss stands as a
monument to his ability as a fire fighter.
Before the paid Department was established,
the Volunteers appointed their own Chief. They
elected Chief Carlisle as their Chief, in whom they
had every confidence, and he is to-day considered
one of the best fire chiefs in America.

It 7 O. 1 HALL, situated at No. 32 Water Street, between Carrall
\ and Abbott, is about to be vacated for a more suitable loca-
-*•*■ ▼■ tion at the corner of Gore Avenue and Cordova St., which
building is in course of construction, and will, when completed, be one of the most modern fire stations in America. No. 1 will
practically be a duplicate of No. 2. except in height, which will
be only two stories.
No. 2 Hall, headquarters, is situated on Seymour St., between
Georgia and Robson Streets, and commands a fine view of the
city and harbour, and is the mecca of tourists and citizens who
wish to get a glimpse of the city and surroundings. A trip to the
top of the 100 ft. tower will repay anyone interested in Vancouver
scenery. The Firemen are always obliging and courteous to visitors
and cordially invite you to visit them. The blacksmith work is all
done at this hall, where they have a fine shop and repair department.
No. 3 is located on 9th Avenue, between Quebec Street and
Westminster Avenue. This hall has six men stationed permanently
who keep it in order and always ready for inspection.
No. 4 faces on 9th Avenue and Centre Street, Fairview; has
four men stationed there and it presents a picture of a perfect fire
hall uneclipsed by any.
No. 5 is on Vernon Avenue and Keefer Street. This, the latest
hall equipped, gives the East End residents fire protection of which
they may be proud. This hall has four men also, who are always
ready at duty's call.

IN LOOKING THROUGH the annuals of history, how many
brave and daring deeds will you find that can be recorded to
the merits of the Firemen? Always ready, no matter what the
danger, to go to the assistance of and often encounter death
themselves, in their efforts to rescue others. What nobler work
can a man do? A great many people think the Fireman's life is
one of ease, and that all they do is to draw a salary and at times,
of course, put out a fire; but you will always find the people who
think that, are those who never read of the valorous deeds and
the heroic work of the bravest men on earth. A Fireman's life is
one of constant danger—he must give up all thoughts of self and
live only for the lives of others. Here in our City we have had
an opportunity to witness some of the good work done by our boys,
and throughout the land you will not find more willing or cheerful workers. Everyone knows that whenever the Fire Boys give a
ball that it always follows that there is sure to be a fire to spoil
their pleasure, yet they never complain, though they have to leave
the lights and music and go out into the cold and wet; they do it
cheerfully and take it as part of their duty. Give honor where
honor is due, and you will find that a larger share of it falls to
1 Our Local Fire Boys.''

AssL Chief C. Thompson.
RECREATION is one of the most essential things necessary
to a Fireman and must be supplied in a large degree in the
different Fire Halls. Vancouver is at present well equipped
in this respect. Chief Carlisle encourages recreation and
all athletic sports, believing that to have a perfect Fire Department
something more than discipline is required; therefore he has had
handball courts laid out at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Halls, and hopes in the
near future to have them installed in all the Fire Halls in the City.
Playing handball brings into play nearly every muscle in the
body, and promotes quickness and deftness in the sense of sight.
Any fine day a good game of handball may be witnessed at any
of the above mentioned places, and to hear the coaching and
noise made by the supporters of the different teams, you would
think Vancouver and New Westminster were engaged in a game
of lacrosse for the championship.
Being desirous of promoting the interest in the game among
the Fire Boys of the City, Mr. Geo E. Trorey, the Hastings Street
Jeweler, presented them with a handsome silver cup, mounted on
ebony, to be contested for annually, the winners to hold the cup
until defeated.
The cup was presented in 1900 and was won by Thompson and
Flood who were defeated the following year by Courtney and
Mitchell. It next fell to the lot of Murray and McKenzie, then to
Mitchell and Campbell, then to Ravey and Duncan, and is now held
by Cameron and Moffatt who keep it until defeated.
Through the generosity of Mr. Trorey, the winners of the cup
are presented with a handsome set of cuff links as a perpetual
souvenir of their ability as experts at the game.
