The Chinese are the single\r\nlargest Asian minority ethnic group in Vancouver arid have a\r\nuniquely concentrated pattern of distribution.\r\nThe study first summarises the general history of\r\nChinese immigration into Canada, particularly British Columbia,\r\nover the past 100 years, and also examines the growth of Vancouver's Chinatown. Using published and unpublished census data the\r\nchanging patterns of Chinese settlement within the City of\r\nVancouver are described. Next, drawing on census data and on\r\nmaterial collected through a Sample. Survey of 125 Chinese families\r\nin 1969, some overall characteristics of the Vancouver Chinese\r\ncommunity are described, in terms of such factors as age-sex\r\nstructure, education, period of immigration, and residential\r\npatterns.\r\nIt is hypothesised that there are basic differences\r\nbetween the Chinatown and suburban Chinese in Vancouver. This\r\nhypothesis was tested and it showed that there were significant\r\ndifferences between the Chinese living in these different locations\r\nin terms of demographic, economic, residential and social factors,\r\nin conclusion, the study suggests that inquiries of this nature\r\ncould be profitably repeated with other ethnic groups within the\r\ncity.","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.language.iso","value":"eng","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.publisher","value":"University of British Columbia","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.rights","value":"For non-commercial purposes only, such as research, private study and education.
