Some of the morphological and physiological characteristics of strains of Sporidiobolus and of Sporobolomyces\ndikarya were observed and compared. These included optimum temperatures for mycelial and total growth, standard cytological and colonial descriptions, ability to assimilate\ncarbon compounds, and ultraviolet survival curves. Attempts were made to dedikaryotize mycelia by ultraviolet irradiation and by chemical means; these were unsuccessful. Various techniques were used in an attempt to induce germination\nof resting spores. Presoaking in distilled water followed by incubation on water agar at room temperature proved successful for Sporobolomyces odorus spores which germinated by the formation of ustilaginaceous promycelia. Primary sporidia of this strain gave rise to non-mycelial colonies, thus completing the life cycle of this organism.\nA new species, Sporidiobolus microsporus, is described. The dimensions of the yeast cells and ballistospores average 2 X 8\u03bc.\nThe dikaryon is almost identical to that of other species, but the resting spores are typically intercalary. Carbon source assimilation by the new species differed from that of other species of the genus. Attempts to germinate resting spores of Sporidiobolus microsporus were unsuccessful.","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.language.iso","value":"eng","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.publisher","value":"University of British Columbia","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.rights","value":"For non-commercial purposes only, such as research, private study and education.
