Ecological assessment of recreation impacts in the Stein watershed : a baseline study Sharpe, Ian
Abstract
This study was designed as the baseline data collection phase of much longer term recreation impact assessment study in the Stein River Basin, British Columbia. Site, soil and vegetation data were gathered at 15 informal campsites situated throughout the 1000 km² watershed using standard British Columbia Forest Service ecological inventory methods. 'Experimental' (campsite) and 'control' plot inventories provided the basis for vegetation species composition and abundance (percent cover and stems per hectare) comparisons to determine present impacts. Recommendations for future recreational development in the valley were made on site-by-site and ecological subzone bases derived from impact assessment findings. Future replications of ecological inventories of the 15 campsites will enhance planning capabilities by allowing further identification of impact prone and resistant areas.
