Steady and transient aerodynamics of spoilers on airfoils Bernier, Robert

Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the extension of a two-dimensional linearized potential flow theory applied to a thin airfoil with spoiler. The extension is first related to the prediction of the pitching moment for an airfoil immersed in a uniform steady state flow. Linear techniques have been used to determine the transient pitching moment due to the erection of an upper surface spoiler. Finally, stability derivatives of the transient responses have been calculated. The non-uniform flow created by the steady-state oscillations of a spoiler around its hinge has also been investigated. The determination df the out of phase lift, pitching moment and spoiler hinge moment was achieved by integrating the resulting oscillatory pressure loading on the foil.
