However, the\r\nunderstanding and provision of spiritual care in psychiatric nursing practice,\r\nespecially how spirituality helps in recovering from depression has not kept pace\r\nwith this trend. Given the increasing recognition of the influence of spirituality in\r\nhealth and healing, a deeper understanding of how spirituality helps patients\r\nrecover from depression would be of value to health care professionals in the\r\nprovision of care. The purpose of this study was to explore the role of spirituality\r\nin recovering from depression, and to develop a greater understanding of how\r\nspirituality affects the recovery process of depression.\r\nSignificant knowledge can be gained from participant's stories of what\r\nspirituality means to them and how it has helped them to recovery from\r\ndepression. Thus the research design utilized for this study was qualitative\r\nnarrative inquiry, as outlined by (Lieblich, Tuval-Mashiach and Zilber, 1998). Eight\r\nface to face interviews were conducted with individuals who identified\r\nthemselved as having depression and who indentified that spirituality has helped\r\nthem in recovering from depression.\r\nThe findings of this study revealed that spirituality played a significant role\r\nfor the participants in their recovery from depression. The study also revealed that\r\nspirituality was experienced as connections (god\/higher power, self, others, and\r\nnature), and through these connections participants found meaning and purpose\r\nin their lives. The implications for this study is that it will inform nurses, nurse\r\neducators, and other health care practitioners of the importance of patients\r\nspirituality in the course of their recovery from depression. This information will\r\nalso enable nurses to assess clients spiritual needs and provide an atmosphere\r\nfor clients to express their spirituality. The findings of the study will contribute to\r\nnurses providing formal and informal spiritual interventions when caring for\r\npatients who are depressed.","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.language.iso","value":"eng","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.publisher","value":"University of British Columbia","language":null},{"key":"dc.rights","value":"For non-commercial purposes only, such as research, private study and education.
