A feasibility study has been conducted\r\nto assess economic and community development opportunities for Prairie\r\nGateway that would support Refuge activities and provide a unique amenity for\r\nCommerce City residents and visitors. A preliminary site design has been\r\nproposed and initial costing and facility needs have been developed for a variety\r\nof program options.\r\nThis design thesis builds on these previous studies and outlines a site concept\r\nfor Prairie Gateway based on biophysical, social and historical data. The notion\r\nof prairie was explored in terms of art and literature to help better understand and\r\ndesign an appropriate and meaningful prairie experience. A review of several\r\nprecedents for design on prairie landscapes was conducted to help in creating a\r\nsite specific design language for Prairie Gateway. A series of design principles -\r\nspatial, design detail and program components were developed as building\r\nblocks for the proposal, and recur throughout at a variety of scales from planning\r\nto detailed design.\r\nMuch of the Prairie Gateway design is linked to the concept of reconnection to\r\nprairie in terms of community, history and prairie experience. Spatially, at the\r\nplanning scale, the design references the patterns of settlement based on the\r\nsurveyed grid of the American West. At the more detailed scale the design\r\nincorporates a materials palette of the vernacular prairie farm including rough\r\nstone, brick, adobe and corrugated metal.\r\nThe Prairie Gateway design includes a concept plan for the mile square portion\r\nof the site, a conceptual plan for a public park and visitor's complex, a schematic\r\nplan for an educational centre and lodge, a site plan for the lodge and detailed\r\ndrawings for program areas within the lodge complex. Each portion of the\r\ndesign references the overall design and program principles developed during\r\nthe analysis phase. Ideally, these principles can be used to guide future work on\r\nPrairie Gateway in order to create a holistic and integrated design.","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.format.extent","value":"4943910 bytes","language":null},{"key":"dc.format.mimetype","value":"application\/pdf","language":null},{"key":"dc.language.iso","value":"eng","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.publisher","value":"University of British Columbia","language":null},{"key":"dc.rights","value":"For non-commercial purposes only, such as research, private study and education.
