The effects of  N\u2082, CO\u2082 and C\u2082H\u2086 on the ferric species and on the bulk behaviour of the sample are observed by M\u00f6ssbauer  Spectroscopy and adsorption studies under outgassing conditions. The ferric oxyhydroxide\r\ninitially blocks the pores to gas adsorption but reducing it\r\nto Fe\u2070\r\nat 943\u2070 K and reoxidizing it to \u03b1-Fe\u20820\u2083 in air at 773\u2070 K frees the pores.
