These case\r\nstudies include the first two years of a transdisciplinary UBC Earth and Ocean\r\nSciences collaborative initiative, The Science and Practice of Sustainability; and\r\none Community Service Learning program coordinated through the UBC Learning\r\nExchange, coined Edibility and Awareness. This action research, largely conducted\r\nat the on-campus UBC Farm, constituted cyclical processes of innovation,\r\nimplementation and reflection. These iterative processes formed the basis for four\r\nprimary outcomes. First, the creation of TSL as a useful model for place-based,\r\nlearner-centred university education for sustainability. Second, the development\r\nof Head, Hands and Heart, a simple organizing principle for working groups and\r\nindividuals to engage in TSL by integrating cognitive learning activities (e.g.\r\necological-footprinting), practical skill sharing and enactment (including physical\r\nlabour), and enablement of passion and values to be translated into goals and\r\nbehaviour. Third, the development of a cognitive landscape for understanding TSL\r\namongst related learning models clarifies its position as a valuable bridge amongst\r\nsustainability pedagogies that share characteristics of being inter\/transdisciplinary,\r\npractical and\/or place-based. Fourth, the explicit TSL model presented here may\r\nbetter enable transformations to sustainability through more effective planning,\r\nimplementation and evaluation of collaborative sustainability pedagogies. In sum,\r\nTSL, at UBC and beyond, can clarify, elevate and further unify sustainability-oriented\r\npedagogies while strengthening their transformative potential.","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.language.iso","value":"eng","language":"en"},{"key":"dc.publisher","value":"University of British Columbia","language":null},{"key":"dc.rights","value":"For non-commercial purposes only, such as research, private study and education.
