I begin with a literature review that explores the themes of effectiveness of PjBL, the role of student characteristics in PjBL, challenges associated with enacting PjBL, and improving the effectiveness of PjBL. I then argue that this process of learning can be used effectively in Home Economics and that it complements the prevailing claim that Home Economics involves “hands-on” learning and emphasizes “problem-solving” and the general use of active learning. To facilitate the use of PjBL in Home Economics I present basic information and various examples of how PjBL may be used in Home Economics education in the form of a handbook for teachers. The handbook is designed so that it can be separated from this larger document to be used in professional development workshops and circulated among home economics teachers.
University of British Columbia.
