Each work is presented twice with different camera views. The first is 'reverse angle' (or near reverse) which gives the viewer an impression of the conductor as seen by the performers. The second is 'house view', the stage as seen from the audience: in places the conductor is also visible. Additionally, these two perspectives give the viewer different audio impressions, that of both the performer and the audience. In each case, there is a marked difference in balance of singers, speakers and instrumental ensemble. Tape one is of Histoire du soldat by Igor Stravinsky, performed at the Frederick Wood Theatre at the University of British Colombia. The performing ensemble was a collaboration between the author, acting as Musical Director and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) student Sabine Sengmueller (Stage Director), with members of cast and instrumental ensemble other students. The reverse angle view is of performances on November 15 and 17, as indicated in the table of contents. The house view is taken from the performance on November 20. Tapes two and three are of Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel. These were performed at the Sagebrush Theatre in Kamloops, with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra and UBC Opera Ensemble performing on December 13. Again, tape two is reverse angle and tape three, house view. For this performance, the author is acting as Assistant Conductor to Mr Bruce Dunn, Music Director of the Kamloops Symphony. The final tapes, number 4 and 5, are of a collaborative project by the University of British Colombia School of Music Symphony Orchestra and Opera Ensemble. Professor Jesse Read, head of the School or Music, was the conductor for this season. The author acted as Assistant Conductor, performing on April 2, 1998. The work performed, La Finta Giardiniera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is important to note that the reverse angle (tape 4) was compromised by the presence of the stage set, and a lack of technical equipment at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, where the performances occurred. The angle shown is from the choir stalls, opposite prompt side. Ill TABLE OF CONTENTS Tape 1 Histoire du soldat Igor Stravinsky 0:00:00 -0:44:12 Reverse angle 0:00:00 -0:02:30 0:02:30 -0:05:51 0:05:30 -0:07:40 0:07:50 -0:13:48 0:13:50 -0:14:51 0:14:52 -0:15:40 0:15:50 -0:17:47 0:17:52 -0:20:58 0:21:00 -0:24:20 0:24:30 -0:26:49 0:26:49 -0:28:55 0:28:55 -0:31:04 0:31:20 -0:32:45 0:32:52 -0:33:35 0:33:43 -0:34:30 0:34:35 -0:38:52 0:39:00 -0:42:12 Marche du soldat Petits airs au bord du ruisseau Marche (reprise) Pastorale Petits airs du bord du ruisseau (reprise) Petits airs du bord du ruisseau (reprise) Marche du soldat (reprise) Marche royale Petit concert (trois dances) Tango (trois dances) Valse (trois dances) Ragtime Danse du diable Petit chorale Couplets du diable Grand chorale Marche triomphale du diable 0:42:25 - 1:53:10 House view November November November November November November November November November November November November November November November November November Tape 2 Hansel und Gretel Reverse angle Engelbert Humperdinck Tape 3 House view Engelbert Humperdinck Hansel und Gretel 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, 17, 17, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, 15, Tape 4 La Finta Giardiniera Reverse angle Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Tape 5 House view La Finta Giardiniera Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Histoire du soldat Igor Stravinsky Hansel und Gretel Engelbert Humperdinck La Finta Giardiniera Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Appendix A Programme Appendix B Programme Appendix C Programme 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 1997 Appendix A Igor stravim^ky frederi© wood theatre ai ma varsity of foritish coBorotibia novcinber 12th (2.00pm), 15th (2.30pm), 17th (7.30pm), 20th (6.00pm) Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the master of music degree, with a major in opera conducting. His children, Hansel & Gretel, are hungry. To distract her little brother, Gretel teaches him to sing and dance. Their mother scolds them for playing instead of working. N o w the children must go into the woods to pick strawberries for the evening meal. While they are gone, their father returns from work with a bundle of food under , his arm. Learning that the children have gone into the woods, he grows apprehensive and joins his wife in searching for them. Act II In the forest. While Hansel is looking for strawberries, Gretel sits under a tree singing a folk song. Hansel returns with the berries, and since the children are hungry, they yield to the temptation of eating them. Night begins to fall. The darkness brings terror, for the children are now unable to find their way home. The Sandman comes to put the children to sleep with a lullaby. After they fall asleep, angels descend to provide the children with a protective ring. INTERMISSION Act III The Witch's house. The D e w Fairy sprinkles dewdrops on the children. Waking, they find themselves in front of a gingerbread house decorated with gingerbread cookie figures of children. Hansel and Gretel begin to eat morsels of the house. Suddenly the Witch emerges. Her magic keeps the children rooted to the ground. She locks Hansel in a cage and forces Gretel to do housework. The Witch sings a gleeful song about her strange activities. Gretel, meanwhile, steals her wand and with it frees her brother. W h e n the Witch orders Gretel to look into the flaming oven, Gretel feigns stupidity and asks the Witch to show her how this is done. W h e n the Witch stands before the open door, Hansel and Gretel push her inside and slam the door. The Witch's oven explodes. This is the signal for all the Witch's previous victims to change from gingerbread back into little children. The parents of Hansel and Gretel appear, find their children are free, and all join in a celebration. 14 The Vancouver Premier of W.A.
