Both h i s t o r i c a l precedents and c u r r e n t Vancouver p r o j e c t s were s t u d i e d to determine t h e i r a t t i t u d e toward community i n dense housing s i t u a t i o n s . I found the designs that were most s u c c e s s f u l i n p r e s e r v i n g a t r a d i t i o n a l sense of community demonstrated a f a r g r e a t e r respect f o r one's i n d i v i d u a l i t y . They provided a s t r o n g frame f o r v a r i a b l e urban l i v i n g , which r e f l e c t s the p l u r a l i s m of urban l i f e . The program f o r t h i s t h e s i s was a live/work community and one live/work b u i l d i n g w i t h i n that planned community. The s i t e f o r t h i s e x p l o r a t i o n was South-East F a l s e Creek. The r e s o l u t i o n of my proposal began with developing a new housing f a b r i c , a p rototype that could be used at South-East F a l s e Creek or i n other areas of the c i t y . The f a b r i c I developed i s a more i n t i m a t e , f i n e r s l i c e of the e x i s t i n g Vancouver c i t y g r i d . By m a i n t a i n i n g some of the c r i t i c a l dimensions of Vancouver's c i t y g r i d , the design of the new f a b r i c can e i t h e r f i t i n t o the e x i s t i n g g r i d or occur next to i t . The community p l a n p r o v i d e s s e v e r a l d i s t i n c t a d j a c e n c i e s f o r the b u i l d i n g s : l i v e s i d e , work s i d e , park s i d e and s t r e e t / p a r k i n g s i d e . My concern with the design of the b u i l d i n g was to i d e n t i f y a set of p o s s i b i l i t i e s that are i n h e r e n t i n the community f a b r i c , which show the d i v e r s i t y of the b u i l d i n g i t s e l f as well as the f l e x i b i l i t y of the space w i t h i n the u n i t s . i i i TABLE OF CONTENTS T i t l e Page i A b s t r a c t i i Table of Contents i i i Acknowl edgement i v Mt.
