Written i n 1930, this charming piece a p t l y demonstrates Ibert's philosophy that music should be "the expression o f an interior adventure". A a r o n C o p l a n d ' s Duo for Flute and Piano, written i n 1971, uses t r i a d s , l a r g e i n t e r v a l s and f l o a t i n g ' m e l o d i e s to c r e a t e a f e e l i n g of s p a c i o u s n e s s which i s c h a r a c t e r i s t i c of h i s s t y l e . P o p u l a r l e g e n d h a s i t t h a t t h e t a r a n t e l l a was d a n c e d as a c u r e f o r the m i l d l y t o x i c b i t e of the t a r a n t u l a . Today, the t a r a n t e l l a (a f o l k d a n c e f r o m s o u t h e r n I t a l y ) i s a k i n d o f mimed c o u r t s h i p d a n c e , u s u a l l y p e r f o r m e d b y one c o u p l e s u r r o u n d e d b y a c i r c l e o f others. The music is usually r e g u l a r l y phrased, in t r i p l e meter, and alternates between major and minor modes a l l while gradually i n c r e a s i n g i n tempo. T h e Sonate in D Major b y Hummel was w r i t t e n sometime between 1810 a n d 1814. I have c h o s e n to use a f o r t e p i a n o i n s t e a d of the modern piano for tonight's performance. The f o r t e p i a n o , w h i c h d a t e s f r o m the 18th and 19th c e n t u r i e s , i s a c r o s s between a h a r p s i c h o r d and the modern p i a n o . I t s t o n e a n d t o u c h i s much l i g h t e r t h a n t h a t o f the modern p i a n o . I n a d d i t i o n , I am u s i n g a w o o d e n h e a d j o i n t on my f l u t e to c r e a t e a s o u n d w h i c h i s m o r e c h a r a c t e r i s t i c o f f l u t e s f r o m the C l a s s i c a l e r a . U n t i l the e a r l y t w e n t i e t h c e n t u r y f l u t e s were made e n t i r e l y o f wood. The wooden h e a d j o i n t i s l e s s b r i l l i a n t t h a n s i l v e r and b l e n d s n i c e l y w i t h the tone of the f o r t e p i a n o . Pitch was an a d d e d c o n s i d e r a t i o n i n t h i s p i e c e a s t h e f o r t e p i a n o i s t u n e d t o A430 ( r a t h e r than today's standard of A 4 4 0 ) , and the modern f l u t e i s n o t meant t o p l a y so ' f l a t ' . A s p e c i a l t h a n k you t o Ward M u s i c f o r the use of the b e a u t i f u l A b e l headjoint. The final w o r k on t o n i g h t ' s p r o g r a m i s J o l i v e t ' s Chant de Linos. Composed i n 1944, t h i s w o r k was originally written for flute, s t r i n g q u a r t e t and h a r p . J o l i v e t ' s a r t was dedicated to r e s t o r i n g m u s i c ' s a n c i e n t s e n s e , as t h e m a g i c a l and i n c a n t a t o r y e x p r e s s i o n o f t h e r e l i g i o s i t y o f human c o m m u n i t i e s .
