Department of Ato4 lTEXJf jg£^ i The University of British Columbia ] Vancouver, Canada Date 6 o t - l ^ 2-5 1 i DE-6 (2/88) ABSTRACT This Thesis Project began as an attempt to explore the basic principles of Cinema: Light, Time and Movement. As the project evolved I began to explore and develop various design ideas. These included: the exploration of voyeuristic qualities within Cinema and Architec tural ideas based on illusion and rhythm; cinema as a medium; and, geometric maipulations and how different geometries might co-exist in an attempt to foster an image of diversity while defocusing the stereotypical idea of school and institution. The final product consisted of a 36,000 sq. ft. Film Centre, that housed a Film School, Indoor and Outdoor Cinemas, the Vancouver Film Festival Offices, a multi-media Restaurant and an Independant Film Studio. ii T A B L E OF CONTENTS Abstract ii Table of Contents iii List of Figures iv Acknowledgement v Massing Model and Context Model 1 First Floor Plan , 2 Second and Third Floor Plan 3 Fourth and Fifth Floor Plan 4 Sixth and Roof Floor Plan 5 Project Elevations and Sections 6 Detail Model 10 in LIST OF FIGURES Figure 1 Massing Model 1 Figure 2 Context Model: Project Context - Proposed Conditions Figure 3 Plan: First Floor 2 Figure 4 Plan: Second Floor 3 Figure 5 Plan: Third Floor Figure 6 Plan: Fourth Floor 4 Figure 7 Plan: Fifth Floor Figure 8 Plan: Sixth Floor 5 Figure 9 Plan: Roof Floor Figure 10 Lane Fascade Looking East 6 Figure 11 Section E-E: Through Cinema One Looking North Figure 12 Elevation: Nelson Fascade Looking North 7 Figure 13 Section A-A: Through Courtyard Looking North Figure 14 Elevation: Homer Fascade Looking West 8 Figure 15 Section B-B: Through Courtyard Looking West Figure 16 Section C-C: Through Film Studio and Cinema Lobby Looking West 9 Figure 17 Section D-D: Through Courtyard Looking North Figure 18 Detail Model: 10 Figure 19 Detail Model: Figure 20 Detail Model: 11 Figure 21 Detail Model: iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENT I would like to thank the members of my thesis committee, Sandy Hirshen, Duane Eleverum, David Hepworth, and especially, Linda Brock.
