Finding the humanity in revolt : directing Alice Birch's “Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again.”

In the following pages, I will summarize, explore, and analyze my directorial work on Alice Birch’s revolutionary feminist play, Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. This production ran from March 11 to March 14, 2020 at the Frederic Wood Theatre as part of the University of British Columbia Department of Theatre and Film’s 2019-2020 season. The first chapter of this document details the script analysis that I undertook as preparation for this project’s rehearsal process. The analysis includes my initial thoughts on the script, my ideas about the play’s structure, dramatic action, characters, and themes, and my ultimate goals for the production. The second chapter consists of personal journal entries which document my entire directorial process, from the design process to rehearsals to our opening night performance. In these daily reflections, I describe the collaborative process of designing the play, the unique obstacles and successes that I experienced with the actors in the rehearsal room, and the many ways in which my own views on the material evolved as the show developed. The third chapter contains is a self-evaluation, written after I watched the opening night performance of the play. In this section, I assess what I felt to be the strengths and weaknesses of this project, what I learned as a director, and how external factors influenced this production’s ultimate outcome.
