This session described how around the world an increasing number of governments are creating open data portals – websites where governments publish in digital form, data about their operations, budgets, and services. These new “open cities” mark a profound shift in the relationship between the citizen and government, opening up the opportunity for citizens to challenge authority in new ways, innovate and co-create new services, as well as foster new businesses and organizations. David Eaves explored what the rise of the open government in the digital age means; shared some of the exciting developments taking place around the world right now; and, discussed what the future holds for open government and what it could mean for universities, including UBC as an institution, and for faculty and students interested in research possibilities. This session took place on October 20, 2010 in the Lillooet Room of the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre at the University of British Columbia.
