Description

This text includes documents created for UBC Library’s Critical Literacy Kits to support instruction in the area of critical literacy and Indigenous children’s literature. Since 2019, UBC librarians and library students have worked across three library branches to create Critical Literacy Kits which are intended to mediate and contextualize access to children’s literature that include problematic, racist, and inaccurate depictions of Indigenous peoples, nations, and traditions. Each Critical Literacy Kit includes a selection of problematic books from the collection, as well as supplementary handouts and learning materials to support librarians and other educators in their use of the kits as tools to promote critical literacy. This document includes a selection of learning materials created for inclusion in these kits. OER Description: This workshop/training material on critical literacy was developed to support students in grades 6-8. This open educational resource (OER) includes readings lists, activities, reflection prompts, critical thinking questions, definitions, and summaries. The latest version of this OER can be found on the UBC Library Website as part of the Critical Literacy Kits.
