Ukraine : Past, Present, Persistence

What is Ukraine as a nation? What does it mean to be Ukrainian? What key events have shaped its history? Why does the Russian Federation seek to destroy both Ukrainians’ sovereignty and identity today? The Centre for European Studies hosted a wide-ranging, interactive discussion on Ukraine’s past, present and persistence on March 7, 2022. Moderated by Dr. Katherine Bowers, Associate Professor of Slavic Studies and Director of the Centre for European Studies (University of British Columbia) with introductions by Dr. Charlotte Schallié, Chair of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies (University of Victoria). Guest speakers were Dr. Serhy Yekelchyk, Professor of History and Germanic & Slavic Studies (University of Victoria) and expert in Russian and Eastern European History and Dr. Tamara Krawchenko, School of Public Administration (University of Victoria), A question and answer period concluded the event.
