Description

School of Population and Public Health Associate Professor Eugenia Oviedo-Joekes and guest speakers Lianne Gladue, Lee Gladue, and Vincent Harrop discussed the controversial harm reduction service of providing medically-prescribed heroin to users with severe substance use issues at SPPH Grand Rounds on March 17th 2017. Dr. Oviedo-Joekes spoke about the findings of two major trials where heroin was provided in a supervised setting as an alternative to drugs sold on the street, and the need for Canada to be brave when tackling the overdose crisis by offering safe alternatives to people who use drugs. The guest speakers shared their experiences with severe substance use issues and their participation in Crosstown Clinic, the only clinic in North America to offer medical-grade heroin (diacetylmorphine) and the legal analgesic hydromorphone within a supervised clinical setting to chronic substance use patients.
