Healing spiritual trauma Harlow, Luna

Abstract

Five qualitative interviews were conducted to explore how people who identify with spiritual trauma from fundamentalist Christian communities are healing. The results from these interviews led to a discussion about the what aspects of religious fundamentalism are spiritually traumatizing. The information about trauma and PTSD's effects on the brain come from Peter Levine, Bruce Perry, and Bessel Van der Kolk. Three perspectives that might aid in reconstructing and healing spiritual trauma are Buddhist meditation, womanist spirituality, and Indigenous perspectives on land. This study concluded that survivors of religious trauma often separated from their childhood faith community to find a more inclusive way of loving others.
