Description

Bang Khun Thian (โรงเจมหาโพธิสัตว์กวนอิม) (菩薩壇) is a three-winged Guanyin (觀音) temple in Bangkok, Thailand. The temple houses both Buddhist and Daoist deities, even though the main altar is dedicated to Guanyin. The following images show the Phra Mae Thorani (ព្រះម៉ែធរណី) altar in the right back corner of the Bang Khun Thian temple (โรงเจมหาโพธิสัตว์กวนอิม) (菩薩壇) courtyard. Image 01 shows an overview of the altar, which is a stand-alone altar constructed out of various tiles. Image 02 shows a close-up of Phra Mae Thorani, and the large censer and water offering place in front of her. Phra Mae Thorani is a Southeast Asian "Mother Earth Goddess" (ព្រះម៉ែធរណី), or Neang Konghing (នាងគង្ហីង), who is known for wringing the waters of detachment out of her hair to drown Mara, who was a demon sent to foil Gautama Buddha's meditation under the Bodhi tree. Image 03 shows a perspective of where the altar is relative to the right side of the courtyard. Metadata created and compiled by: Kira Johansen.
