The Hell Tableau (地獄變), Niche 20, Baodingshan Dafowan Rock Carvings (寶頂山大佛灣摩崖造像) – Ten Kings (2) Anderl, Christoph
Description
Baodingshan Dafowan Rock Carvings (寶頂山大佛灣摩崖造像) is situated in Baoding Town (寶頂鎮), Dazu District (大足區), Chongqing (重慶). The site contains 32 rock carving niches dated to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279 CE). This niche depicts a complex Hell Tableau (地獄變) illustration in four layers. The upper layer contains a line of ten Buddha images representing the Buddhas of the Ten Directions. The middle layer has Kṣitigarbha (Dizang Bodhisattva, 地藏菩薩) flanked by the Ten Kings (shi wang, 十王), who are in charge of the Hells and their attendants. The bottom two layers depict the punishment scenes of the eighteen hells. The images of the Ten Kings are distributed evenly in the second layer with the Officers of Rapid Recompense (su bao si guan, 速報司官) and Immediate Recompense (xian bao si guan, 現報司官) on either side. The Ten Kings (from left to right) are the Great King Qinguang (秦廣大王), the Great King Chujiang (初江大王), the Great King Songdi (宋帝大王), the Great King Wuguan (五官大王), the Heavenly King Yanluo (閻羅天子, Yamarāja), the Great King Biancheng (變成大王), the Great King Taishan (太山大王), the Great King Pingzheng (平正大王), the Great King Dushi (都市大王) and the Sacred King of Turning the Dharma Wheel (轉輪聖王, Cakravartin). The Ten Kings and the two Officers are all in seated postures, flanked by a pair of standing attendants. The desks depicted in front of each of them are graved with inscriptions of their names and the corresponding verses according to the texts in the Verses of the Transformation Tableau of the Hell (Diyu bian jingwen ji song, 地獄變經文偈頌). Descriptions of the photos: Great King Biancheng [Image 01, Image 02]. Great King Taishan [Image 03, Image 04]. Great King Pingzheng [Image 05, Image 06]. Great King Dushi [Image 07, Image 08]. Sacred King of Turning the Dharma Wheel [Image 09, Image 10]. Officer of Rapid Recompense [Image 11 to Image 13]. Metadata created by: Sau Ling Wendy Yu.
