Seven-storey Square Pagoda Xie, Yifeng; Guan, Zhongyue; Wu, Meilian; Cavayero, Michael; Liang, Yunyan

Description

Seven-storied, multi-eave square pagoda with arched exterior roof; produced in white marble with southern facing base, from the Fifteenth Year of the Kaiyuan Era 開元 (727). The western wall of the first story contains an inscription stating: “大唐雲居寺石浮圖銘並序 (Inscription and Preface of the Stone Buddha of Cloud Dwelling Temple, the Great Tang dynasty)," written by Wang Dayue 王大悅. The inscription includes the date: “開元十五年仲春八日 (The eighth day of late spring of the fifteenth year of the Kaiyuan era; 728)." The southern wall contains a square open niche; the opening of the niche has carvings of guardian (figures) on both sides. The height of the first story is 112cm, the surface area is 87cm, the depth is 85.5cm.
